Description

Nicolás Catena Zapata 2018 is one of Argentina’s true icon wines, a luxurious red that helped redefine what Mendoza can achieve on the world stage. Inspired by the great Bordeaux blends of the 18th and 19th centuries—when Malbec played a leading role alongside Cabernet Sauvignon—this cuvée is both a tribute to history and a statement of modern Argentine excellence. Crafted from carefully selected, ungrafted mountain vineyards, it offers depth, elegance and remarkable aging potential.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Nicolás Catena Zapata shows a deep, opaque ruby color with a vibrant garnet rim, signaling both concentration and finesse. The nose is complex and layered: blackcurrant, ripe plum and blackberry are framed by notes of violet, dried roses and graphite, with subtle hints of tobacco leaf, cedar, cacao and sweet baking spices from fine-grained oak. On the palate, this is a powerful yet impeccably balanced wine. Cabernet Sauvignon brings structure, cassis and a refined tannic backbone, while Malbec contributes plush dark fruit, floral lift and a velvety texture. Flavors of black cherry, blueberry, cassis and plum unfold alongside notes of espresso, dark chocolate, pencil shavings and savory herbs. The acidity is fresh and linear, giving precision and energy, and the finish is long, persistent and savory, with finely knit tannins that promise a long life ahead. While already approachable with a proper decant, the 2018 vintage has the structure to evolve gracefully for 15–20 years or more, gaining further complexity and tertiary nuances over time.

Production
The fruit for Nicolás Catena Zapata 2018 comes from high-altitude vineyards in Mendoza, where intense sunlight, cool mountain nights and well-drained, rocky soils produce grapes of exceptional concentration and natural freshness. These vineyards are planted with pre-phylloxera selections of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon, many on their own ungrafted rootstocks, which Catena has meticulously preserved and propagated. Harvesting is typically done by hand in small boxes to ensure gentle handling and optimal selection in the vineyard. In the cellar, the lots are vinified separately, allowing for precise control over extraction and fermentation, often in small tanks that reflect each parcel’s character. The wine is then aged in French oak (a high proportion of it new) to integrate structure and add spice and complexity, while carefully preserving the purity of fruit and the distinctive high-altitude signature of Mendoza.

Food & Serving
Nicolás Catena Zapata 2018 is a natural partner for rich, protein-driven dishes: think dry-aged ribeye, grilled lamb chops, slow-braised short ribs, or venison with dark, wine-based sauces. It also works beautifully with Argentine classics such as asado, empanadas with beef or lamb, and mature hard cheeses like aged Manchego or Parmigiano-Reggiano. Serve at 16–18°C (60–65°F) to show its full aromatic range—avoid serving too warm. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended in its youth to soften the tannins and open up the bouquet; older bottles can be decanted more gently just before serving to separate any sediment.

Producer
Catena Zapata is widely regarded as the pioneering estate that put Argentine fine wine on the global map. Founded in 1902, the Catena family has spent generations studying Mendoza’s high-altitude terroirs, planting vineyards ever higher into the Andes and championing the Malbec grape long before it became a global star. Under the leadership of Nicolás Catena and now his daughter Laura, the winery has been at the forefront of research into altitude, soil and clonal selection, often in collaboration with leading viticultural and academic institutions. The creation of the Nicolás Catena Zapata cuvée in 1997 marked Argentina’s first true “luxury” wine to be widely exported and critically acclaimed, earning consistently high scores and playing a key role in redefining the image of Argentine wine from value-driven to world-class. Today, Catena Zapata remains a benchmark producer, both for Mendoza and for New World Bordeaux-style blends in general.
