Description
Castelfeder Mazon Pinot Nero 2023 is an elegant, terroir-driven expression of Pinot Noir from the high-altitude Mazon plateau in Alto Adige. It stands out for its precision, finesse, and cool-climate freshness, showing the kind of poise that has made Mazon one of Italy’s most respected sites for Pinot Nero.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a bright ruby-red color with a clear, lively sheen. The nose is refined and inviting, offering ripe cherry, raspberry, and wild berry aromas, layered with subtle spice, delicate herbal notes, and a quiet mineral edge.
The palate is harmonious and focused, with juicy fruit, vibrant but well-integrated acidity, and very silky tannins. Its slender frame still carries notable depth and length, finishing fresh, clean, and persistent. This is a Pinot Nero with the balance and structure to age gracefully for several years, gaining more complexity and nuance over time.
Production
This wine comes from the Mazon plateau in Alto Adige, a high-elevation area known for its cool climate, excellent airflow, and soils that lend Pinot Nero its characteristic elegance and definition. The combination of altitude and diurnal temperature shifts helps preserve freshness while allowing steady ripening. Harvested with care and vinified to emphasize purity and site expression, the result is a wine that reflects both its terroir and Castelfeder’s precise craftsmanship.
Food & Serving
Best served slightly cool, around 14–16°C, this Pinot Nero pairs beautifully with roasted poultry, duck breast, veal, mushroom dishes, and salmon. It also works well with aged cheeses and lighter game dishes. Decanting is not strictly necessary, but a brief airing can help the aromas open up if the wine is served young.
Producer
Castelfeder is a well-regarded family estate in Alto Adige, known for producing wines that highlight the clarity, elegance, and diversity of the region. Founded in 1969, the winery has built a strong reputation for its expressive whites and refined reds, with Mazon Pinot Nero among its most iconic bottlings. Over the years, Castelfeder has earned recognition for combining tradition, precision, and a deep respect for terroir.
