Description
Campo al Mare Bolgheri Rosso Superiore Baia al Vento 2022 is a refined Tuscan red that captures the coastal elegance of Bolgheri in a modern, polished style. Crafted from Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, it’s a Bordeaux-inspired blend with a distinctly Italian soul. As a Superiore from a highly regarded subzone of Tuscany, this wine stands out for its concentration, structure and impressive finesse at the dinner table and in the cellar.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Baia al Vento 2022 shows a deep, vibrant ruby core with youthful purple reflections along the rim, hinting at its freshness and intensity. The nose opens with ripe blackberries, dark cherries and cassis, layered with notes of violet, Mediterranean herbs, graphite and a touch of sweet spice and cocoa from carefully judged oak.
On the palate, this Bolgheri Rosso Superiore is full-bodied yet beautifully balanced, with supple, velvety tannins and a refined, long-lined structure. Flavors of black plum, blackcurrant and wild berries are wrapped in nuances of tobacco leaf, cedar, licorice and a subtle saline/mineral edge that speaks of its coastal origin. The finish is long and persistent, with fresh acidity that keeps the wine vibrant. Enjoyable in its youth with a short decant, it has the stuffing and structure to develop gracefully over the next 8–12 years, gaining complexity and silkier texture.
Production
The grapes for Baia al Vento are sourced from Campo al Mare’s estate vineyards in Bolgheri, a coastal part of Tuscany known for its gravelly, sandy soils mixed with clay and marine deposits, and the moderating influence of sea breezes from the Tyrrhenian coast. These conditions favor slow, even ripening and excellent aromatic development in Bordeaux varieties. The fruit is picked parcel by parcel at optimal maturity, often harvested by hand to ensure careful selection of clusters. In the cellar, each variety is vinified separately: gentle crushing, temperature-controlled fermentation and extended maceration to extract color, aroma and fine tannins without harshness. After blending, the wine is matured in French oak barriques (a mix of new and used) for additional structure, complexity and integration before bottling.
Food & Serving
Baia al Vento 2022 is a natural partner for rich, savory dishes such as Tuscan bistecca alla fiorentina, grilled lamb chops, slow-braised beef, wild boar ragù or roasted game birds. It also pairs beautifully with aged pecorino, Parmigiano Reggiano and truffle-inflected dishes, as well as hearty mushroom risottos or roasted root vegetables. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and textural finesse. Young vintages benefit from 1–2 hours in a decanter to allow the wine to open up and soften the tannins, especially if served with more delicate dishes.
