Description

Calera Pinot Noir Villiers Vineyard 2018 is a single-vineyard expression that shows why Calera is one of California’s Pinot pioneers. Sourced from the high-elevation limestone slopes of the Central Coast, this wine marries New World generosity with an old-world sense of restraint and structure. It’s a perfumed, nuanced Pinot Noir that rewards both casual sipping and serious contemplation.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Villiers offers a medium ruby hue with bright, translucent edges that hint at its elegance rather than sheer power. The nose is layered and inviting: black cherry and boysenberry are joined by notes of cocoa, subtle baking spices and a touch of dried herbs, with a faint, savory wildness underneath. On the palate, this Pinot Noir is supple and polished, with dark berry fruit, black cherry and boysenberry framed by fine, chalky tannins. Hints of roasted berries, cocoa nibs, forest floor and a gentle gamey nuance add complexity as it opens in the glass. The acidity is fresh but integrated, giving the wine lift and length rather than sharpness. While already harmonious and approachable now, it has the structure and balance to age gracefully for 8–12 years from vintage, gaining more earth, truffle and savory depth over time.

Production
Villiers Vineyard lies on the limestone-rich slopes of Mt. Harlan in California’s Central Coast, a rare terroir more reminiscent of Burgundy than typical California soils. The high elevation brings cool nights and a long growing season, allowing Pinot Noir to ripen slowly while retaining natural acidity and aromatic complexity. Grapes are typically hand-harvested in small lots at optimal ripeness, then gently destemmed and fermented with careful temperature control to preserve the purity of fruit. After fermentation, the wine is aged in French oak barrels (a mix of new and used) to add subtle spice and texture without overwhelming the vineyard character, before being bottled with minimal intervention to let the site speak clearly.

Food & Serving
Calera Pinot Noir Villiers 2018 is an excellent partner for dishes that echo its balance of brightness and depth. Think roast duck with cherry glaze, herb-crusted pork tenderloin, grilled salmon, mushroom risotto, or roast chicken with root vegetables and fresh thyme. It also works beautifully with game birds and mildly gamey flavors that mirror the wine’s subtle wild notes. Serve at around 14–16°C (57–60°F) for best expression of aroma and texture. A short decant of 30–45 minutes, or at least a good swirl in large Burgundy stems, helps the wine open up and show its full aromatic complexity.

Producer
Founded in 1975 by Josh Jensen, Calera quickly became one of California’s benchmark Pinot Noir producers and a pioneer of limestone-driven vineyards on the Central Coast. At a time when Pinot Noir was far from a sure bet in California, Jensen sought out Mt. Harlan’s rare limestone soils, inspired by the geology of Burgundy’s greatest sites. Over the decades, Calera has earned a reputation for age-worthy, site-specific Pinot Noirs that capture the nuance of each vineyard, with Villiers emerging as one of its most expressive single-vineyard bottlings. Widely respected by critics and collectors, Calera has played a significant role in putting Central Coast Pinot Noir on the world stage.
