Cantina Kaltern’s Campaner is a still, expressive Gewürztraminer made entirely from Traminer Aromatico, showcasing the variety’s unmistakable floral and exotic-fruit character. Rooted in South Tyrol’s long Gewürztraminer tradition, it combines generous aromas with a precise, elegantly structured palate.
Tasting Notes
Intense yellow with golden reflections, it opens with rose petal and lychee, followed by hints of cinnamon, clove and sage. The palate is full and aromatic, balancing freshness and softness with ripe exotic-fruit flavours, a mineral-edged structure and a persistent, pleasantly bitter finish.
Enjoy it while youthful for its vivid fragrance and fruit; its structure should also allow it to develop over the short term.
Production
The grapes come from south-facing hillside vineyards in Caldaro, at 450–500 metres above sea level. Clay soils with porphyry contribute structure and a mineral thread, while the sunny slopes help build aromatic concentration. Carefully selected, fully ripe grapes undergo 12 hours of cold maceration before gentle pressing, natural settling and slow, temperature-controlled fermentation. The wine then rests on fine lees for five months to bring harmony and texture before bottling in spring.
Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled, around 10–12°C. Its aromatic profile pairs well with spiced Asian dishes, fragrant curries, rich seafood and washed-rind or blue cheeses. Decanting is not necessary; opening the bottle shortly before serving is enough to let its aromas unfold.
Producer
Founded in 1900, Cantina Kaltern is closely connected to the winegrowing traditions of Caldaro and the wider South Tyrol region. Gewürztraminer has deep roots nearby: its presence is documented in the village of Termeno as far back as the 14th century. Campaner continues that heritage through grapes grown on the region’s distinctive hillside soils.
