Ca’ dei Frati Ronchedone 2023 is a full-bodied red from the southern shores of Lake Garda, presented in a magnum format that’s well suited to sharing. Its distinctive blend of Sangiovese, Marzemino and Cabernet Sauvignon brings together the character of Lombardy with a bold, structured style from a region better known for white wines.

Tasting Notes
Expect a deep, intense colour and aromas of black cherry and ripe blueberry, layered with balsamic notes and a hint of jam. On the palate, the wine is concentrated and powerful, with lively acidity and velvety tannins bringing balance to its rich fruit and lingering finish. Its structure and maturation give it scope to develop further in bottle, though no specific drinking window is provided.

Production
The grapes come from hillside vineyards in Lugana di Sirmione, near Desenzano on Lake Garda’s southern shore. A mild-winter, cool-summer microclimate and morainic soils of clay, gravel, limestone and sand shape the fruit. Vines are trained using Guyot and spur-pruned systems, with selected bunches harvested in late September. Long maceration on the skins takes place in stainless steel, followed by malolactic fermentation in wood for 15 months and a further 10 months of maturation to bring the blend together.

Food & Serving
Serve with grilled or roasted red meats, game, or richly flavoured dishes that can stand up to the wine’s ripe fruit and structure. A serving temperature of around 16–18°C should show it well. Give it time to breathe before serving; decanting for about an hour can help the aromas open, especially while the 2023 vintage is young.
