Description

Brane Cantenac 2022 is a poised and deeply refined red Bordeaux from one of Margaux’s most historic Second Growth estates. In this warm, concentrated vintage, the wine combines impressive power with the château’s hallmark elegance and aromatic finesse. A classic Left Bank blend, it offers a glimpse of what makes Margaux so beloved: perfume, precision, and a long, graceful finish.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Brane Cantenac 2022 shows a deep, vibrant ruby-purple core with a bright rim, signaling both youth and intensity. The nose is immediately expressive, with layers of blackcurrant, ripe plum, and blackberry framed by violets, graphite, and a subtle hint of cedar and tobacco leaf. As it opens, you may notice refined notes of crushed herbs, dark chocolate, and a touch of spice from well-judged oak. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, with sleek, polished tannins and a remarkable sense of freshness for such a warm year. Juicy black fruits and red currant are interwoven with notes of pencil shavings, cigar box, and a delicate floral lift, leading into a long, mineral-inflected finish. The structure suggests excellent aging potential: while it can be approached in its youth with a bit of air, it will reward patience and should evolve beautifully over 10–20 years or more, gaining complexity and silky texture with time in bottle.

Production
Château Brane-Cantenac lies on some of Margaux’s most prized deep gravel soils, which provide superb drainage and contribute to the wine’s finesse, aromatic purity, and fine-boned structure. The vineyard is dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and occasionally small portions of other traditional Bordeaux varieties, each parcel carefully matched to its specific terroir. Grapes are typically harvested by hand, parcel by parcel, to ensure optimal ripeness and precise selection in a vintage like 2022. In the cellar, the wine is vinified in temperature-controlled vats, with gentle extraction to preserve elegance rather than sheer power, then matured in French oak barrels (a proportion of which are new) to integrate tannins and add subtle layers of spice without overshadowing the fruit or floral character so emblematic of Margaux.

Food & Serving
Brane Cantenac 2022 is a natural partner for refined, savoury dishes: think roast lamb with herbs, classic beef tenderloin, duck breast, or veal with morels. It also pairs beautifully with game birds, truffle dishes, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or mature Gouda, where its structure and aromatic complexity can truly shine. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F) to highlight both fruit and freshness. In its youth, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to soften the tannins and allow the bouquet to fully express itself; as the wine matures, a shorter decant to remove sediment will generally suffice.

Producer
Château Brane-Cantenac is one of the historic names of Margaux, officially classified as a Deuxième Grand Cru Classé in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. The estate’s origins date back to the 18th century, but it rose to particular prominence under Baron de Brane, the famed “Napoleon of the Vines,” whose name it still proudly bears. Today, under the stewardship of the Lurton family, Brane-Cantenac has cemented its reputation for producing wines that epitomize Margaux: perfumed, refined, and built for graceful aging. Widely respected by critics and collectors alike, the château is considered a benchmark for the appellation, consistently delivering wines that balance modern precision with classic Bordeaux elegance.
