Description
Bollinger Grande Année 2018 is a powerful, classically styled Champagne that captures everything fans love about the house: depth, precision, and a distinctly vinous character. Made from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, it combines Bollinger’s signature richness with the tension and finesse of a top vintage cuvée, making it a benchmark wine from Champagne.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a brilliant golden hue with a fine, persistent mousse. The bouquet opens with ripe yellow apple, pear, citrus peel, and stone fruit, layered with toasted hazelnut, brioche, white flowers, and a subtle chalky minerality.
The palate is medium- to full-bodied, textured, and deeply layered, with generous fruit wrapped around a firm, saline core. Notes of baked apple, dried apricot, roasted nuts, and fresh pastry lead into a long, elegant finish. It has excellent aging potential and should develop even more complexity over the coming years.
Production
Bollinger Grande Année is sourced from carefully selected vineyard parcels in Champagne, where chalky soils and a cool climate bring structure, freshness, and aromatic precision. The grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, and the wine is vinified with the attention to detail expected of a prestige vintage Champagne.
As with Bollinger’s traditional approach, production emphasizes texture and depth, allowing the wine to express both the character of the vintage and the house style. The result is a wine with concentration, balance, and a strong sense of place.
Food & Serving
This is an excellent Champagne for refined dishes such as lobster, scallops, roast chicken, veal, truffled dishes, or aged hard cheeses. It can also be enjoyed on its own as a contemplative aperitif. Serve chilled at around 8-10°C, and a short decant can be beneficial if the wine is tasted very young, though it is not essential.
Producer
Bollinger is one of Champagne’s most respected historic houses, founded in 1829 and long associated with depth, craftsmanship, and a Pinot Noir-led style. Based in Aÿ, the house has built its reputation on producing wines of substance and longevity, including its celebrated vintage cuvées. Bollinger remains a reference point for traditional, terroir-driven Champagne and is widely regarded as one of the region’s great producers.
