Description
Bodegas De La Riva’s Oloroso Viejo San Jose is a truly rare and characterful Sherry, drawn from a single historic solera and shaped by more than 40 years of oxidative ageing. Concentrated, powerful, and remarkably elegant, it captures the deep, old-world soul of Jerez in a bottle that is as much a piece of Sherry history as it is a luxury wine experience.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Oloroso shows a deep mahogany-brown hue with impressive density and a polished, luminous edge. The nose is intensely layered, with dried figs, walnut, roasted hazelnuts, mocha, herbal tea, and a touch of lightly burnt caramel, all lifted by saline, iodine-like mineral notes that keep the aromatics vibrant and fresh.
The palate is dry yet wonderfully broad, creamy in texture but driven by a focused, energetic core. Delicate bitter notes add grip on the finish, which is long, velvety, and evolving, with wave after wave of complexity. While it is already beautifully composed now, the wine’s concentration and oxidative depth suggest it will continue to hold and fascinate for a long time.
Production
Made from 100% hand-harvested Palomino sourced from Pago El Carrascal, one of the inland pagos of Sanlúcar de Barrameda well suited to robust Sherry styles. The wine is fermented in old oak barrels, then fortified to 17% alcohol, preventing flor yeast from developing and allowing the wine to age oxidatively in solera without biological influence. This extraordinary bottling comes from a historic solera system that was left untouched for decades, resulting in severe concentration and an exceptionally limited release of just 457 bottles in 2020.
Food & Serving
Best enjoyed with braised meats, slow-cooked dishes, game, or mature cheeses, where its savoury depth and nutty complexity can really shine. Serve slightly cool, around 12–14°C, to preserve freshness and aromatic precision; decanting is not essential, but a brief air contact in the glass can help the wine open up beautifully.
Producer
Bodegas De La Riva is a respected name in Sherry, known for working with rare and historically significant solera wines that reflect the traditions of Jerez. The story of San Jose is particularly notable: the solera was originally part of Cuvillo & Cía, later left untouched for decades before finding its way to De La Riva, who recognized its extraordinary value. The result is an iconic and highly sought-after Sherry that stands as a testament to patience, heritage, and exceptional cellar aging.
