Description

Bocca di Lupo Castel del Monte Pietrabianca Chardonnay Magnum 2024 is a refined, southern Italian white that marries Apulia’s sun-drenched character with a surprisingly vibrant freshness. Crafted by Tormaresca, the Antinori family’s flagship estate in Puglia, this magnum bottling is perfect for the table, offering both immediate charm and the structure to evolve gracefully. The blend of Chardonnay with a touch of native Fiano highlights the estate’s ambition to create world‑class whites in a region better known for powerful reds.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Pietrabianca 2024 shows a luminous straw-yellow color with delicate green reflections, hinting at its youthful energy and crisp profile. The nose opens with ripe citrus—lemon zest and grapefruit—woven with notes of white peach, pear, and golden apple, followed by layers of acacia blossom, jasmine, and a gentle Mediterranean herb character. Subtle hints of vanilla, toasted almond, and brioche may emerge, reflecting careful use of oak. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied with a beautifully balanced tension between ripeness and freshness. The warm 2024 growing season, tempered by strong day–night temperature swings, delivers generous fruit—stone fruit and citrus—lifted by lively acidity and a distinct mineral streak from the Castel del Monte terroir. The Fiano component adds texture, a slight salinity, and complex notes of honey and wild herbs on the long, elegant finish. In magnum format, this vintage should drink beautifully now but has the potential to evolve gracefully for 5–7 years, gaining creaminess and more pronounced nutty and tertiary nuances over time.

Production
The Bocca di Lupo estate lies in the Castel del Monte area of northern Apulia, at higher altitudes where cooler nights and strong diurnal shifts help preserve acidity and aroma in white varieties. The vineyards, planted on calcareous, rocky soils rich in limestone, naturally limit yields and contribute to the wine’s pronounced minerality and tension. Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, with careful selection in the vineyard and at the winery to ensure only the healthiest bunches are used. Chardonnay and Fiano are gently pressed, and the must is fermented in a combination of stainless steel and oak, depending on the lot, to balance purity of fruit with subtle complexity. A period of maturation on the fine lees with periodic bâtonnage enhances texture, aromatic depth, and aging potential, before the final blend is assembled and bottled, with the magnum format further supporting slow, harmonious development.

Food & Serving
Pietrabianca 2024 is an excellent partner for refined seafood dishes such as seared scallops, grilled turbot, branzino, or shellfish risotti, as well as elegant poultry preparations like roast chicken with herbs or guinea fowl. It also pairs beautifully with vegetable-based Mediterranean cuisine—think grilled vegetables, artichokes, and herb-laced pasta—as well as semi-aged cheeses and burrata with tomatoes and basil. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) to highlight its freshness and aromatic complexity; in magnum, consider opening 30–45 minutes in advance and, if possible, decanting young bottles briefly to allow the wine to open up fully.

Producer
Tormaresca is the Apulian outpost of the renowned Antinori family, whose winemaking heritage stretches back over six centuries and is deeply woven into the story of Italian wine. Established to showcase Puglia’s potential for premium wines, Tormaresca has played a crucial role in elevating the region’s reputation, combining native varieties with international grapes and modern, quality‑driven viticulture. The Bocca di Lupo estate in Castel del Monte is one of Tormaresca’s flagship properties, known for its high-altitude vineyards and limestone-rich soils, which yield distinctive, characterful wines. Pietrabianca has become a benchmark for southern Italian white wine, frequently recognized in international wine guides and by critics as one of the region’s most compelling expressions of Chardonnay and Fiano.
