Description

Bertram-Baltes Dernauer Pfarrwingert 2019 is an elegant German Pinot Noir from one of the Ahr’s most distinctive vineyards. Produced from hand-picked Spätburgunder and fermented naturally in locally sourced oak, it combines delicate red-fruited character with smoky, mineral complexity and finely polished structure.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Spätburgunder shows a clear ruby-red colour. The nose initially leans towards a restrained, slightly reductive style, with aromas of smoke, stone and subtle earthiness. With time and air, delicate red fruit emerges, led by cool raspberries and cherries, followed by gentle spice reminiscent of dark sourdough bread and a hint of caraway. The palate is juicy and finely textured, with generous red fruit supported by refreshing acidity and fine-grained tannins. Its mineral and savoury nuances add depth without overpowering the fruit. The wine is approachable now with decanting, but its balance and structure should allow it to develop further in bottle over the coming years.

Production
The Pfarrwingert vineyard lies directly behind the Bertram-Baltes winery on a south-facing slope in Dernau. Its soils of slate and greywacke retain heat, helping the Pinot Noir achieve ripeness while preserving freshness. The grapes are harvested by hand, spontaneously fermented in barrels made from local oak and bottled without filtration, allowing the vineyard’s mineral character and the wine’s nuanced texture to remain expressive.

Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 14–16°C, ideally after allowing the wine to breathe in a decanter for 30–60 minutes. Its bright acidity and fine tannins make it a versatile partner for roast poultry, duck, veal, pork tenderloin, mushroom dishes and gently seasoned game. It also pairs beautifully with earthy vegetables and dishes featuring lentils or roasted root vegetables.

Producer
Bertram-Baltes is a specialist Ahr producer focused on expressive, terroir-driven Spätburgunder. The Pfarrwingert vineyard is particularly significant to Julia Bertram and Benedikt Baltes, as it lies directly behind their winery and is considered their home vineyard. Their hands-off approach, including spontaneous fermentation, local oak and no filtration, places emphasis on the character of the site and the elegance of the vintage.
