Description

Bernhard Ott Grüner Veltliner Am Berg Bio 2023 is a vibrant, organically farmed white from the loess-rich slopes surrounding Feuersbrunn in Wagram, Austria. Positioned as one of Ott’s most accessible cuvées, it captures the purity, freshness and precision that have made the estate a benchmark for modern Grüner Veltliner. This wine’s combination of mineral tension, herbal lift and juicy fruit makes it as food‑friendly as it is easy to enjoy by the glass.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Am Berg shows a pale straw to light lemon color with greenish reflections, underlining its youthful freshness. The nose opens with distinct vegetative tones—fresh-cut grass, hay and dried straw—before revealing layers of green apple, grapefruit, citrus zest and a subtle, stony minerality. On the palate, it is brisk and refreshingly dry, with a sleek, focused profile. Crisp green apple and white grapefruit drive the flavor, supported by hints of fresh herbs and white pepper, a classic Grüner Veltliner signature. The loess soils show through in a fine, salty-mineral backbone and a touch of mid-palate extract, while the minimal residual sugar keeps the wine lean, lively and highly drinkable. The finish is herbal, delicately spicy and very clean. Enjoy it over the next 2–4 years for maximum freshness and vibrancy.

Production
Am Berg is sourced from organically farmed vineyards on the loess-dominated slopes at the edges of the Feuersbrunn plain in Wagram, where deep, fine-grained loess soils lend both minerality and texture to Grüner Veltliner. The slightly elevated, breezy exposures help preserve acidity and aromatic freshness. Grapes are typically harvested by hand to ensure careful selection of healthy, ripe fruit, then gently pressed. Fermentation takes place primarily in stainless steel to capture purity of fruit and terroir expression, followed by maturation on fine lees for added texture and complexity without sacrificing the wine’s characteristic precision and clarity.

Food & Serving
This Grüner Veltliner is a versatile partner at the table, pairing beautifully with light to medium-weight dishes such as grilled or poached fish, shellfish, sushi, roasted chicken, schnitzel, seasonal salads, asparagus, artichokes and vegetable-focused cuisine. Its herbal, peppery edge also suits Asian-inspired dishes with ginger, lemongrass or mild chili heat. Serve well-chilled at 8–10 °C. Decanting is not necessary, but opening the bottle 10–15 minutes before serving allows the fruit and subtle spice notes to emerge fully.
