Description
Berlucchi '61 Franciacorta Satèn Brut is an elegant, all-Chardonnay sparkling wine that captures the finesse and sophistication of Italy’s answer to Champagne. Crafted in the traditional method in the heart of Lombardy’s Franciacorta region, this Satèn style offers a uniquely creamy, silky mousse and a refined, understated sparkle. Named in honor of 1961—the year Berlucchi produced the first modern Franciacorta—it’s a bottle with both style and history in every glass.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Berlucchi '61 Satèn shows a luminous straw-yellow color with subtle green reflections and an ultra-fine, persistent perlage. The nose opens delicately with notes of white flowers, crisp green apple, and pear, followed by hints of citrus zest, almond, and a gentle touch of brioche from extended lees aging.
On the palate, this Franciacorta is all about finesse and texture: creamy, soft, and beautifully balanced, with Satèn’s hallmark gentle pressure giving a caressing, velvety mousse. Flavors of ripe orchard fruit, lemon curd, and a whisper of vanilla are supported by lively acidity and a clean mineral backbone. The finish is long, refined, and pleasantly savory, making it as compelling as an aperitif as it is at the table. Best enjoyed within a few years of release for maximum freshness and vibrancy, though 3–5 years of cellaring can add extra complexity and depth.
Production
Berlucchi '61 Franciacorta Satèn Brut is sourced from Chardonnay vineyards in the gently rolling hills of Franciacorta, where glacial moraines, limestone, and mineral-rich soils provide ideal conditions for high-quality sparkling wine. The region’s temperate climate, moderated by nearby Lake Iseo, allows for slow, even ripening and excellent natural acidity. Grapes are hand-harvested to ensure careful selection of perfectly ripe, healthy fruit. After gentle pressing, the base wines undergo temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel, with a portion often matured on fine lees to build texture and complexity. The wine then undergoes a second fermentation in bottle (Metodo Classico) and rests on the lees for an extended period, developing its characteristic creaminess and refined bubbles before disgorgement and dosage to achieve the Satèn Brut style.
Food & Serving
This Satèn is a versatile, food-friendly sparkling that shines alongside delicate and refined dishes. Pair it with crudo, oysters, sushi, or lightly grilled seafood, as well as creamy risottos, poultry in light sauces, and soft cheeses like burrata or taleggio. Its gentle mousse and balanced acidity also make it a sophisticated choice for aperitivo with charcuterie and canapés. Serve well chilled at around 8–10°C (46–50°F). While decanting is not necessary for this style, pouring into tulip-shaped sparkling wine glasses will help concentrate the aromas and showcase its elegant texture.
Producer
Guido Berlucchi is a pioneering name in Franciacorta and widely credited with sparking the region’s transformation into Italy’s premier traditional-method sparkling wine appellation. In 1961, in partnership with winemaker Franco Ziliani, Guido Berlucchi produced the first bottle of modern Franciacorta, laying the foundation for an entire category of fine Italian sparkling wine. Today, Berlucchi is one of the region’s most respected and influential producers, known for meticulous vineyard management, sustainable practices, and a consistently high level of quality across its range. The '61 line pays tribute to that groundbreaking year, celebrating Berlucchi’s role as a trailblazer in Lombardy and a benchmark for Franciacorta worldwide.
