Benanti Etna Rosso 2024 captures the distinctive character of Sicily’s volcanic slopes in an elegant blend of Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio. Made by a producer regarded as a benchmark on Etna since 1988, it brings together vivid red-fruit character, freshness and a finely mineral, saline edge.
Tasting Notes
Bright ruby red with violet highlights, it opens with expressive aromas of ripe red fruit and delicate hints of vanilla. The palate is dry and harmonious, with lively freshness, a subtle saline-mineral character and fine, well-integrated tannins. A persistent finish returns to the wine’s red-fruit notes.
Production
The grapes come from vineyards on Etna’s northern, southeastern and southwestern slopes, at elevations of 450 to 900 metres. Vines grow in mineral-rich volcanic sand, while the mountain climate, steady ventilation and marked day-to-night temperature shifts help preserve aromatic finesse. Harvest takes place around mid-October; the varieties are vinified separately, destemmed and macerated on their skins for around 15 days. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled steel tanks with selected native yeasts. After malolactic fermentation, Nerello Mascalese matures partly in steel and partly in French oak, while Nerello Cappuccio remains in steel; the wines are then blended and rested.
Food & Serving
Enjoy with hearty pasta dishes, red or white meats, flavourful fish and aged cheeses. Serve lightly cool, around 16–18°C, to show its freshness and aromatic detail. A short time in the glass should be sufficient; decanting is optional, though a brief decant can help the wine open up.
Producer
Founded in 1988, Benanti has helped establish Etna as one of Italy’s most compelling wine regions. The estate focuses on wines shaped by the volcano’s contrasting slopes, high-altitude vineyards and mineral-rich soils. Its use of selected native yeasts reflects a commitment to expressing the distinctive character of Etna.
