Belisario Verdicchio di Matelica Riserva Cambrugiano 2023

Belisario’s Cambrugiano is a structured, full-bodied Verdicchio from the hills of Matelica in Italy’s Marche region. First made in 1988, it was the first Verdicchio Riserva and remains a landmark expression of the area’s wine tradition.

Tasting Notes
The nose brings together fresh almond, ripe peach and chamomile, with aromatic herbs adding a savoury edge. On the palate, lively acidity and a broad, glycerol-soft texture lead into a long, distinctly mineral finish, with delicate spice and a hint of smoke.

Production
The Verdicchio grapes are hand-harvested and carefully selected for ripeness. They undergo partial cold maceration, followed by temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel. The wine then matures on fine lees in both stainless steel and toasted oak barrels for at least a year, before a further period of rest. The south-facing vineyards lie in the upper Esina Valley, where pronounced continental temperature shifts help preserve freshness and aromatic definition; the loosely composed soils contribute to the wine’s characteristic saline, mineral profile.

Food & Serving
Serve at around 10–12°C with grilled or roasted fish, shellfish, poultry, or dishes featuring herbs and toasted almonds. Its structure can also suit richer seafood preparations and aged cheeses. A brief spell in the glass will help open the aromas; decanting is not essential, though a short decant can be useful for a younger bottle.

Founded in 1971, Belisario is a cooperative winery based in Matelica and a prominent ambassador for Verdicchio from the area. Cambrugiano, produced since 1988, helped establish the region’s Riserva style and has repeatedly received the prestigious Tre Bicchieri award. The estate also highlights its care for the land and commitment to organic farming practices.
