Bastianich Vespa Bianco 2022

Bastianich Vespa Bianco 2022 is a refined, age-worthy white wine that captures the character of Friuli-Venezia Giulia. This distinctive blend of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Picolit combines richness and texture with the region’s hallmark mineral freshness. First created in 1997, Vespa Bianco is Bastianich’s flagship white wine and a compelling expression of the estate’s ambition to produce world-class wines from Friulian terroir.

Tasting Notes
The wine shows a bright, polished appearance with a generous texture suggested by its expressive bouquet. On the nose, layers of preserved apricot, beeswax, broom blossom and honey are complemented by a subtle mineral character. The palate is full-bodied and enveloping, balancing its richness with vibrant acidity and a persistent, saline mineral quality. Long lees ageing gives the wine a silky, rounded mouthfeel, while its structure and freshness make it suitable for further bottle ageing.

Production
The grapes come from hillside vineyards near Premariacco and Cividale in the province of Udine, at elevations of approximately 60–130 metres. Excellent sun exposure supports even ripening, while the area’s calcareous Eocene marl soils lend the wine its distinctive mineral and saline character. Each variety is harvested according to its individual ripening period and carefully sorted before gentle pressing. Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Picolit are vinified separately, with part of the wine fermented in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks and the remainder in oak barrels. The wine is then aged for an extended period on its lees with regular bâtonnage, building depth, silkiness and structure before further cellar maturation.

Food & Serving
Its combination of body, freshness and mineral persistence makes Vespa Bianco an excellent match for shellfish, grilled or roasted fish, seafood risotto and delicate white meats. It also pairs particularly well with mature, full-flavoured cheeses. Serve lightly chilled at around 10–12°C. Decanting is not essential, but a short decant or 20–30 minutes of aeration can help reveal the wine’s layered aromas, especially when enjoyed young.
