Barbeito, 5 year Malvasia Reserve (sweet)

Barbeito’s 5 Year Malvasia Reserve is a beautifully rich sweet Madeira, made from Malvasia—known locally as Malmsey—the grape traditionally used for the most luscious styles of the island. It combines generous sweetness with a lifted freshness, offering the classic depth and complexity that have made Madeira one of Portugal’s most historic fortified wines.

Tasting Notes
Deep amber in the glass, it opens with inviting aromas of toasted nuts, honey, burnt caramel and dried fruit. On the palate, it is full-bodied and enveloping, with concentrated sweetness balanced by a lively line of freshness that keeps the wine vibrant rather than heavy. The finish is long and warming, with lingering notes of caramelised nuts and oxidative spice. Thanks to its structure and acidity, it will continue to hold well for years, especially once opened.

Production
The Malvasia grapes are sourced from selected vineyards in Arco de São Jorge, one of Madeira’s cooler and more distinctive growing areas. After harvest, the wine is aged for five years in French oak barrels using the traditional Canteiro method, in which casks mature slowly in lofts exposed to natural temperature shifts. This gentle, long aging develops the signature toasted, caramelised character that defines top Madeira.

Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for nut-based cakes, cinnamon-spiced desserts, blue or mature cheeses, or simply as a luxurious after-dinner glass on its own. Serve slightly chilled, around 12–14°C, to best highlight its balance of sweetness and freshness. Decanting is not necessary.
