Description
Barbeito’s 10 Year Verdelho Reserve is a beautifully balanced Madeira that sits just off dry, making it especially appealing for those who enjoy complexity without excessive sweetness. Made from the Verdelho grape and aged patiently in the traditional Canteiro style, it combines freshness, structure, and that unmistakable Madeira character with a long, gastronomic finish.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows the amber-gold tone expected from mature Madeira, with a bright, luminous edge that hints at its freshness. The nose is layered and inviting, opening with citrus peel, honey, toasted almonds, and subtle dried fruit, all framed by the signature warm, lightly brûléed notes developed through long ageing.
On the palate, it is medium dry with a mineral core that keeps the wine lively and focused. Flavours of citrus, honey, burnt almonds, and a touch of dried apricot unfold over a textured, savory finish. Thanks to its acidity and 10 years of ageing, it has plenty of life ahead, though it is already showing great harmony now.
Production
The Verdelho grapes come from selected vineyards in São Vicente and Prazeres, two areas that help shape the wine’s freshness and tension. Barbeito ages this Madeira for 10 years using the Canteiro method, with barrels stored in warmer lofts where natural day-night temperature changes slowly develop the wine’s characteristic complexity. The long maturation in French oak adds depth, oxidative nuance, and the gentle toasted notes that define the style.
Food & Serving
This is a highly versatile Madeira for food, especially with ibérico ham, pâté, consommé, tapas, or other umami-rich dishes. It also works beautifully with roasted nuts, aged cheeses, and savory seafood preparations. Serve slightly chilled, ideally around 12–14°C, and decanting is generally not necessary, though a brief rest in the glass can help the aromas open up.
Producer
Barbeito is one of Madeira’s most respected producers, known for its focus on purity, precision, and site expression. Founded in 1946, the estate has helped modernize the island’s image while staying true to traditional methods like Canteiro ageing. Barbeito is especially admired for producing elegant, long-lived Madeira wines that consistently rank among the most characterful examples from the region.
