Description

Barbeito’s 10 Year Sercial Reserva Velha is a beautifully dry Madeira that shows just how elegant and expressive the Sercial grape can be with age. Produced by one of Madeira’s most respected names, it combines freshness, savory depth, and a distinctive salty-mineral edge, making it a standout choice for both contemplation and the table.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows the amber-gold tones expected of mature Madeira, with a bright, polished sheen. The nose opens with dried apricot, papaya, and dates, then moves into more layered notes of pine needles, resin, orange peel, and subtle toasted nuances. The palate is dry in style, yet balanced by just enough residual sugar to keep the wine supple and food-friendly. Expect a complex interplay of dried fruit, saline minerality, and lightly burnt, nutty tones, all carried by the lively, fresh structure that Sercial is known for. With its concentration and acidity, this wine has excellent staying power and will continue to evolve gracefully for many years.

Production
This wine is made from Sercial grapes sourced from selected parcels in Jardim da Serra and Ribeira da Janela, two sites that contribute freshness, precision, and mineral tension. Barbeito uses the traditional Canteiro method, aging the wine for 10 to 14 years in French oak casks stored in warm attic spaces, where natural temperature swings help shape Madeira’s signature complexity. The slow maturation brings out the wine’s toasted, caramelized, and slightly smoky character while preserving its natural lift.

Food & Serving
This is an exceptional wine with savory dishes and salty ingredients, especially Parmesan, olives, and well-cured Iberico ham. It also works beautifully with nuts, aged cheeses, and refined appetizers where its dryness and mineral backbone can shine. Serve slightly chilled, ideally around 12-14°C, and decanting is generally not necessary, though a little air can help the aromas open up in older bottles.

Producer
Barbeito is one of Madeira’s leading producers, known for its precision, elegance, and commitment to showcasing the island’s classic styles. The house has earned a strong reputation for quality across both traditional and more nuanced expressions of Madeira, and it is especially admired for wines that balance age, freshness, and clarity. Today, Barbeito is widely regarded as one of the benchmark producers of the region.
