Description
Avignonesi Desiderio Merlot 2021 is a refined Tuscan red that combines the plush generosity of Merlot with the structure of Cabernet Sauvignon. Born from one of Tuscany’s most respected biodynamic estates, it reflects both the richness of Cortona and the elegance of Montepulciano, with a history rooted in Avignonesi’s long-standing legacy and renewed vision under Virginie Saverys.
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby in the glass, this wine opens with a polished, inviting nose of ripe dark plum, black cherry, and blackberry, layered with notes of sweet spice, cocoa, and subtle oak. On the palate it is full-bodied and supple, with ripe fruit, fine tannins, and a balanced freshness that keeps the wine lively and focused.
The Merlot brings richness and velvety texture, while the Cabernet Sauvignon adds grip and backbone, giving the wine both immediacy and depth. It is enjoyable now for its generous fruit and smooth structure, but it also has the concentration to evolve gracefully over the next several years.
Production
Desiderio is made from carefully selected grapes grown on Avignonesi’s estate vineyards in Cortona and Montepulciano, where soils of clay, silt, and fluvial sediment help shape the wine’s character. The grapes are harvested between late August and early September, handled gently to preserve berry integrity, and vinified in separate lots to highlight the qualities of each parcel.
Fermentation takes place in stainless steel with native yeasts and a controlled temperature, followed by maceration on the skins. Malolactic fermentation is carried out in wooden vats, and after blending the wine matures for 20 months in 225-liter oak barrels, building structure, complexity, and the wine’s signature depth.
Food & Serving
This is a versatile red for hearty, flavour-driven dishes such as grilled beef, roast lamb, braised short ribs, and mushroom-based pasta. It also works beautifully with aged pecorino or a classic Florentine steak. Serve at 16–18°C, and decant for about 30–60 minutes if drinking young to help the aromatics and texture open up.
Producer
Founded in 1974 in Montepulciano, Avignonesi has grown into one of Tuscany’s best-known names, especially for biodynamic viticulture. The estate expanded significantly after Virginie Saverys took over in 2009, guiding the winery toward a more focused and sustainable direction. Today, with 175 hectares across Montepulciano and Cortona, Avignonesi is widely recognized for combining high-quality production with a strong commitment to environmental stewardship.
