Description
Attems Cicinis is a distinguished Sauvignon Blanc from Collio, offering a richer and more layered interpretation of the variety than its typically fresh, herbaceous style. Produced from the estate’s historic Cicinis vineyard and matured in French and American oak, it combines tropical fruit and floral complexity with a refreshing mineral finish. Attems’ roots in the Collio date back to 1106, with the estate now continuing its long winemaking tradition under the Frescobaldi family.
Tasting Notes
The wine displays a clear, intense golden-yellow colour with an invitingly full appearance. Its expressive bouquet reveals ripe tropical fruit, including pineapple and banana, alongside apple, white peach and delicate floral notes. Subtle hints of honey, cinnamon and vanilla add depth, reflecting the influence of oak maturation.
On the palate, Cicinis is fresh yet enveloping, with a well-balanced structure and a rounded texture supported by gentle oak-derived richness. Its distinctive mineral and lightly saline character leads into a persistent, harmonious finish. The wine is enjoyable in its youth, while its structure and careful maturation should allow it to develop further complexity over the next few years when stored properly.
Production
The Sauvignon Blanc grapes are sourced from the Cicinis vineyard in Collio Goriziano, at approximately 153 metres above sea level. South- and southeast-facing vines grow in Eocene marl and sandstone, geological formations created by the uplift of ancient seabeds and known for contributing a pronounced mineral, saline character. The grapes are harvested by hand, traditionally in the second week of September, and undergo partial maceration to enhance their aromatic expression. Fermentation takes place at controlled temperatures in French and American oak barrels, followed by partial malolactic fermentation for added softness and structure. The wine matures for 12 months in new and once-used barrels before a final period of bottle ageing.
Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 10–12°C to balance its aromatic intensity, freshness and oak complexity. Cicinis pairs beautifully with grilled or roasted fish, shellfish, creamy pasta, risotto with mushrooms or asparagus, and poultry in a light cream sauce. Its mineral character also makes it a natural match for seafood with citrus or herb-based dressings. Decanting is not essential, although a short period of aeration in the glass can help the wine’s layered aromas unfold.
Producer
Attems is one of Friuli-Venezia Giulia’s historic wine estates, with documented roots in Collio reaching back to 1106. The estate is dedicated to expressing the distinctive pedoclimatic conditions of the region, particularly its marl and sandstone soils and cool Alpine-influenced climate. Today, Attems forms part of the Frescobaldi family’s portfolio, bringing together centuries of regional heritage with a modern focus on precision and terroir-driven wines. The Cicinis vineyard takes its name from the hill on which it is planted, and the cuvée reflects the estate’s commitment to showcasing this unique site.
