Description
Ar.Pe.Pe Valtellina Superiore Grumello Riserva Sant'Antonio 2018 is a sublime expression of mountain Nebbiolo, combining alpine finesse with serious depth and structure. Sourced from the steep, terraced Grumello subzone in Valtellina, this Riserva captures the rare elegance that only high-altitude vineyards and long, traditional aging can deliver. Named after the historic Sant’Antonio church that overlooks the vineyards, it reflects both the spiritual and human devotion poured into every bottle.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a luminous garnet core with brick-red reflections at the rim—classic for traditionally crafted Nebbiolo. The nose is refined and layered: delicate rose petals, dried violets, red cherry and raspberry, followed by wild strawberry, blood orange zest, and hints of alpine herbs, anise, sweet tobacco, and subtle balsamic notes.
On the palate, it is taut yet silky, with a light-to-medium body that belies its complexity. Precise, high-altitude acidity carries pure red fruit, savory spice, tea leaf, and a distinctive stony, saline minerality that speaks clearly of Valtellina’s rock terraces. Tannins are fine-grained but persistent, framing the wine with classical Nebbiolo structure and impressive length. Already beautiful in its youth, this 2018 has the balance and pedigree to evolve gracefully for 12–20 years, gaining more truffle, leather, and dried flower nuances with time in the cellar.
Production
The grapes come from the Grumello subzone of Valtellina Superiore in Lombardy, where Nebbiolo (locally known as Chiavennasca) clings to steep, south-facing stone terraces at high altitude. The poor, rocky soils and dramatic day–night temperature swings yield grapes of notable aromatic intensity and tension. All work in these ‘heroic’ vineyards is done by hand due to the extreme slopes, and harvesting is meticulous to ensure only perfectly ripe fruit is selected. In the cellar, the wine undergoes a long maceration and malolactic fermentation with extended skin contact, extracting fine tannins and complex aromatics rather than sheer power. It is then matured in large, traditional chestnut casks—an old Valtellina practice that allows slow, gentle evolution without overwhelming the delicate character of the wine—before further bottle aging prior to release.
Food & Serving
This Grumello Riserva shines at the table with refined, savory dishes: braised veal or lamb, roasted game birds, mushroom risotto, truffle pasta, ossobuco, or aged alpine cheeses such as Bitto or mature Taleggio. It is best served at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Burgundy-style stems to highlight its aromatics. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended in its youth to allow the bouquet to unfold and the tannins to soften; older bottles can be gently decanted mainly to remove sediment, just before serving.
Producer
Ar.Pe.Pe (short for Arturo Pelizzatti Perego) is one of Valtellina’s benchmark estates and a steadfast guardian of traditional mountain Nebbiolo. Founded by Arturo in the 1980s, the family estate—now led by his children, including Giovanna—farmed many of the same terraces their ancestors tended generations ago. Working almost exclusively by hand on dizzyingly steep vineyards, Ar.Pe.Pe has become synonymous with long fermentations, extended aging in large casks, and an unwavering commitment to elegance over extraction. Their wines, often compared to top Barolo and Barbaresco but with a distinctly alpine signature, have played a crucial role in restoring Valtellina’s reputation as one of Italy’s great Nebbiolo regions, earning acclaim from sommeliers, critics, and collectors around the world.
