Description

Armand Rousseau’s Mazy-Chambertin 2021 is a commanding yet effortlessly refined Grand Cru red Burgundy, crafted from one of Gevrey-Chambertin’s most characterful vineyards. This is a wine for collectors and Burgundy devotees who appreciate depth, finesse, and a clear sense of place. In 2021—a challenging but classical vintage—Rousseau delivers a Mazy-Chambertin that is both concentrated and beautifully poised, promising immense drinking pleasure over many years.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Mazy-Chambertin shows a deep, shimmering ruby color with youthful brightness at the rim. The nose opens with dark berries and ripe plum, layered with notes of baking spices, subtle woodsmoke, and a distinct earthy character reminiscent of clay-rich soils and forest floor. Hints of dried rose, licorice, and a touch of savory game emerge with air, adding complexity and intrigue. On the palate, this Grand Cru is medium to full-bodied, with a layered and concentrated core of dark fruit framed by supple, finely knit tannins. There is a seamless, almost weightless elegance to the texture, carrying flavors of black cherry, blackberry, and spiced plum alongside mineral undertones and a gentle smokiness. The acidity is vivid but well-integrated, giving the wine lift and precision rather than sharpness. Already harmonious and “problem-free” in its profile, it will reward patience: expect it to evolve beautifully over 10–20 years, gaining further tertiary notes of truffle, sous-bois, and dried herbs with bottle age.

Production
Armand Rousseau’s Mazy-Chambertin comes from Grand Cru parcels in Gevrey-Chambertin, where the terroir is defined by limestone-rich subsoils and clay-laden topsoils that contribute both power and aromatic complexity. The cool Burgundian climate of 2021 produced balanced fruit with good natural acidity and moderate alcohol, ideal for a classical, terroir-driven style. Grapes are typically hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, with careful sorting to ensure only the finest bunches are used. In the cellar, vinification follows a traditional Burgundian approach: gentle extraction to preserve finesse, followed by maturation in French oak barrels (a portion new) to refine structure and integrate tannins without overwhelming the purity of fruit. The result is a wine that clearly reflects both its Grand Cru status and Rousseau’s signature elegance.

Food & Serving
This Mazy-Chambertin 2021 is an excellent partner for refined cuisine: think roast duck with cherries, pigeon or squab, veal sweetbreads, or slow-cooked lamb shoulder with herbs. It pairs beautifully with earthy dishes such as wild mushroom risotto, truffle-infused poultry, or game birds, and can also elevate aged hard cheeses like Comté or Gruyère. Serve at 15–16°C (59–61°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and silky texture. In its youth, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to allow the wine to open up fully; as it matures and develops more tertiary notes, a shorter decant or simply allowing it to evolve in the glass will be sufficient.
