Description

Domaine Armand Rousseau’s Gevrey-Chambertin Clos St. Jacques 1er Cru 2014 is one of the most sought-after expressions of Pinot Noir in Burgundy, combining the depth and seriousness of a great terroir with the finesse that defines Rousseau’s style. Clos St. Jacques has long been regarded as a site capable of producing wines that sit close to Grand Cru level, and the 2014 vintage captures that reputation beautifully with clarity, precision, and elegance.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a vivid, translucent ruby color typical of high-quality Burgundy, with youthful brightness still very much in place. The nose is layered and refined, opening with red cherry, blackberry, and wild berry aromas, followed by floral notes, spice, and a subtle earthy-mineral undertone that speaks clearly of Clos St. Jacques. On the palate, it is polished and poised, with lively acidity giving the wine freshness and direction. The tannins are silky and well-integrated, framing a core of ripe fruit without overwhelming its delicate structure. The finish is long and nuanced, unfolding with hints of forest floor, spice, and mineral depth. While enjoyable now for its balance and aromatic charm, it has the structure to age gracefully for 10–15 years or more.

Production
Clos St. Jacques is one of Gevrey-Chambertin’s most celebrated Premier Cru vineyards, planted on well-drained limestone and marl soils that lend the wines their distinctive mineral drive and perfume. The cool yet balanced 2014 growing season allowed the Pinot Noir grapes to ripen slowly, preserving freshness while building complexity and detail. Domaine Armand Rousseau is known for a restrained, terroir-focused vinification approach that emphasizes purity of fruit, precision, and seamless texture, allowing the character of the vineyard to shine through.

Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with refined dishes such as roast duck, quail, mushroom risotto, veal, or lamb served with herbs and light sauces. It also works well with truffle dishes and aged, earthy cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for about 30–60 minutes if opening young, to allow the aromatics to fully unfold.

Producer
Domaine Armand Rousseau is one of Burgundy’s most iconic estates, with deep roots in Gevrey-Chambertin and a long-standing reputation for producing some of the region’s most collectible and ageworthy Pinot Noir. Founded in the early 20th century and now associated with exceptional vineyards including several Grand Crus, the domaine has earned global acclaim for its elegant, transparent style and remarkable consistency across vintages.
