Description
Domaine Armand Rousseau’s Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques 2013 is a benchmark Burgundy, combining the finesse of Pinot Noir with one of Gevrey-Chambertin’s most celebrated premier cru sites. Often spoken of in the same breath as grand cru vineyards, Clos St. Jacques delivers striking depth, precision, and elegance, all framed by the meticulous craftsmanship of one of the Côte de Nuits’ most revered domaines.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a beautifully translucent ruby hue with the brightness and clarity expected of a top-tier Burgundy. The nose is layered and expressive, offering red cherry, raspberry, and wild strawberry, followed by floral notes, warm spice, and a subtle mineral edge that reflects the vineyard’s character.
On the palate, the 2013 vintage is defined by freshness and balance. Fine-grained tannins give the wine a silky, polished texture, while the lively acidity lends energy and lift. The finish is long and persistent, gradually unfolding with red fruit, spice, and a refined earthy-mineral note. It is drinking well now, but has the structure and nuance to develop beautifully over the next 10–15 years.
Production
Clos St. Jacques is one of Gevrey-Chambertin’s most esteemed premier cru vineyards, known for producing wines of exceptional complexity and depth. The cool 2013 growing season brought excellent acidity and aromatic purity, helping the grapes achieve strong balance and definition. Vinification at Domaine Armand Rousseau is traditionally precise and restrained, designed to preserve site expression and the natural elegance of Pinot Noir.
Food & Serving
This is an ideal match for dishes that complement Burgundy’s subtlety and structure, such as roast duck, pigeon, veal, mushroom risotto, or game birds with earthy sauces. Serve at 15–17°C, and consider decanting for around 30–60 minutes if drinking young to allow the aromas to open fully.
