Description
Domaine Armand Rousseau’s Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques 2005 is a benchmark expression of Pinot Noir from one of Burgundy’s most revered sites. Clos St. Jacques is often spoken of as “grand cru in all but name,” and in this exceptional vintage, Rousseau’s precision and finesse bring out the full depth of the vineyard’s character.
Tasting Notes
The wine shows a deep, elegant ruby colour with remarkable clarity. On the nose, it unfolds in layers of red cherry, raspberry, and wild strawberry, joined by floral notes, spice, and a fine mineral edge that reflects its limestone-rich origins. The aroma is detailed and refined, with the kind of complexity that continues to open in the glass.
On the palate, it is beautifully balanced and impressively structured, with silky tannins, vibrant acidity, and a concentrated core of fruit. Earthy nuances and subtle savoury tones add depth to the long, persistent finish. While already expressive, this wine has excellent ageing potential and will continue to gain nuance and complexity over the next 5–10 years, and likely beyond.
Production
Produced from Pinot Noir in the prestigious Clos St. Jacques Premier Cru vineyard in Gevrey-Chambertin, this wine benefits from a terroir of limestone and clay soils that encourage both intensity and elegance. Domaine Armand Rousseau is known for meticulous vineyard work and careful harvesting, aiming for optimal ripeness while preserving freshness and purity. Vinification is carried out with a light touch to showcase the site rather than overwhelm it, resulting in a wine of clarity, balance, and finesse.
Food & Serving
This is an ideal match for refined dishes such as roast duck, game birds, veal, mushroom risotto, or lamb with herbs. It also pairs beautifully with dishes featuring truffle or earthy root vegetables. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant gently for 1–2 hours if drinking young; older bottles may only need a short aeration before serving.

Domaine Armand Rousseau is one of the great historic names of Burgundy, founded in the early 20th century and long associated with some of the region’s most sought-after wines. Based in Gevrey-Chambertin, the domaine has built its reputation on elegant, terroir-driven Pinot Noir from outstanding vineyard sites. It remains one of the most respected producers in the Côte de Nuits, admired worldwide for consistency, purity, and pedigree.
