Description
Domaine Armand Rousseau’s Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2002 is a striking example of why this legendary Burgundy estate is so highly prized among collectors. From one of Gevrey-Chambertin’s most admired Grand Cru sites, it combines the silky elegance of Pinot Noir with the depth, perfume, and structure that have made Rousseau a benchmark producer in the region.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this 2002 shows the refined depth expected from a mature Grand Cru Burgundy, with a beautifully evolved ruby-garnet colour. The bouquet is layered and inviting, opening with ripe cherry, raspberry, and blackberry before unfolding into rose petals, spice, subtle truffle, and earthy mineral notes.
On the palate, it is generous yet poised, with a full, structured frame and the signature silkiness of well-made Pinot Noir. The acidity remains lively, keeping the wine fresh and focused, while the finish is long and complex, echoing red fruit, savoury spice, and a touch of earth. It is drinking beautifully now, though it can continue to evolve gracefully for another 10 to 15 years.
Production
Charmes-Chambertin is one of the most respected Grand Cru vineyards in Burgundy, known for producing wines that balance finesse with depth. The 2002 vintage benefited from a warm growing season that allowed the Pinot Noir grapes to reach excellent ripeness while preserving structure and balance, resulting in a wine of notable concentration and harmony.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs wonderfully with refined dishes such as roast duck, pigeon, game bird, beef fillet, or mushroom-based dishes like wild mushroom risotto or truffled pasta. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant gently for 1–2 hours if drinking now to allow the aromatics to open fully.
Producer
Domaine Armand Rousseau is one of Burgundy’s most iconic estates, with a long-standing reputation for producing some of the region’s most sought-after wines. Founded in the early 20th century and based in Gevrey-Chambertin, the domaine has become synonymous with precision, elegance, and exceptional terroir expression, earning international acclaim for its Grand Cru bottlings.
