Description
Domaine Armand Rousseau’s Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru 2002 is a benchmark Burgundy, combining one of Gevrey-Chambertin’s most celebrated sites with a notably strong vintage. The result is a wine of depth, precision, and unmistakable Grand Cru stature, shaped by both exceptional terroir and one of Burgundy’s most revered producers.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows the poise and translucency expected of great Pinot Noir, with mature ruby tones at the rim and a refined, luminous core. The bouquet is beautifully layered, moving from ripe cherry, blackberry, and plum into forest floor, leather, tobacco leaf, and subtle smoke, with a distinctly chalky mineral edge adding lift and elegance.
On the palate, the wine is rich yet finely detailed, with silky tannins, vibrant acidity, and a seamless balance between fruit, spice, and earthy complexity. The finish is long and graceful, leaving impressions of spice, damp earth, and delicate smokiness. While already highly expressive, it still has the structure and concentration to evolve further with careful cellaring.
Production
Clos de Bèze is a prestigious Grand Cru site in Burgundy, known for its limestone-rich soils and ability to produce Pinot Noir with both power and finesse. The 2002 growing season offered excellent ripening conditions, and the grapes were harvested at optimal maturity to capture concentration and freshness. Vinification at Domaine Armand Rousseau is traditionally restrained and precision-focused, allowing the vineyard character to remain at the forefront of the wine.
Food & Serving
This is an exceptional match for refined dishes such as roast duck, guinea fowl, game birds, veal tenderloin, or mushroom-based preparations. It also pairs beautifully with truffle dishes and aged, delicate cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 30–60 minutes if drinking now to allow the aromatics to fully open.
Producer
Domaine Armand Rousseau is one of Burgundy’s most iconic estates, founded in the early 20th century and long regarded as a reference point for Gevrey-Chambertin and Grand Cru Pinot Noir. The domaine has earned a global reputation for wines of exceptional purity, elegance, and longevity, with Clos de Bèze standing among its most celebrated bottlings.
