Description

Armand Rousseau Chambertin 2020 is one of the crown jewels of Burgundy, a Grand Cru Pinot Noir from one of Gevrey-Chambertin’s most revered domaines. In this vintage, Rousseau delivers a wine of striking depth and dimension, marrying power with remarkable finesse. Sourced from the historic Chambertin vineyard that helped define Burgundy’s global reputation, this is a bottle for serious collectors and Pinot Noir purists alike.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Chambertin shows a deep, luminous ruby-red hue with youthful vibrancy at the rim, hinting at its concentration and long life ahead. The nose is complex and layered, opening with ripe blackberry and dark cherry, then unfurling to reveal notes of wild forest berries, rose petals, orange zest, and subtle exotic spices. Underneath the fruit lies an earthy core of clay-rich soil, hints of smoked meat, and delicate black truffle, giving the wine a distinctly Burgundian, savoury allure. On the palate, this is full-bodied and multidimensional, yet impeccably balanced. The texture is both muscular and refined, with dense, finely woven tannins supporting a concentrated core of dark fruit. Flavours of black cherry, blackberry and plum are laced with notes of smoked game, sweet spice, and a mineral-driven, almost ferrous undertone. The finish is long, precise and resonant, with lingering spice and floral notes. While already showing impressive generosity and a forward, expressive character in youth, this Chambertin has significant aging potential; properly cellared, it should evolve beautifully for 15–25 years or more, gaining complexity, tertiary nuances and a silkier texture over time.

Production
Chambertin is one of Burgundy’s most storied Grand Cru vineyards, situated on the mid-slope of the Côte de Nuits in Gevrey-Chambertin, with well-drained limestone and marl soils that naturally limit yields and intensify flavour. Armand Rousseau farms these prized parcels with meticulous care, favouring low yields and careful canopy management to ensure optimal ripeness and balance. Harvest is carried out by hand, with strict sorting of the grapes to retain only the finest fruit. In the cellar, vinification is traditional and deliberately restrained: gentle extraction, fermentation in open vats, and élevage in French oak barrels (with a judicious proportion of new oak) to frame, rather than mask, the wine’s terroir. The result is a Grand Cru that captures both the power and the refinement that Chambertin is famed for.

Food & Serving
Armand Rousseau Chambertin 2020 is a natural partner for refined, flavourful cuisine. It is superb with game dishes such as roast venison, pigeon, duck or hare, as well as slow-braised beef, lamb shank, or veal cheeks. Classic Burgundian preparations like boeuf bourguignon, coq au vin, or dishes featuring black truffle or wild mushrooms will underline its earthy, savoury dimensions. Hard and semi-hard cheeses—such as aged Comté or Tomme de Savoie—also make excellent companions. Serve at 16–18°C, ideally after 1–3 hours in a decanter in its youth to allow the aromatics to fully open. For mature bottles, a gentler, shorter decant or simply careful pouring off the sediment is recommended.

Producer
Domaine Armand Rousseau is one of Burgundy’s most iconic and sought-after producers, widely regarded as a benchmark for Pinot Noir from the Côte de Nuits. Founded in the early 20th century by Armand Rousseau, the domaine was among the first in Burgundy to bottle and market its own wines, helping to establish Gevrey-Chambertin’s global reputation. Today, under the guidance of the Rousseau family, the estate farms an extraordinary collection of premier and grand cru vineyards, with Chambertin and Clos de Bèze at the pinnacle. Known for a style that harmonises depth, elegance, and clarity of terroir, Armand Rousseau’s wines regularly feature at the top of critics’ lists and are coveted by collectors worldwide for their consistency, age-worthiness, and classical Burgundian character.
