Anthonij Rupert Optima 2021

Anthonij Rupert Optima is a polished South African red blend that brings together Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and a touch of Malbec in a style that is both refined and expressive. Produced by Anthonij Rupert Wines at the historic L'Ormarins estate in Franschhoek, it reflects the ambition and quality that have made the producer one of the country’s most respected names.

Tasting Notes
Deep, vibrant red in the glass, this wine opens with lifted aromas of plum, wild hedgerow fruit and a delicate perfume of dried lavender. The bouquet is inviting and layered, hinting at both ripeness and freshness. On the palate, Optima shows confidence and balance: elegant in structure yet juicy and generous in fruit. Spicy wooded notes carry through to a rich, lingering finish, with the same floral lavender character from the nose adding finesse. It is enjoyable now, but should also age gracefully over the next several years as the tannins soften and the complexity develops.

Production
The grapes are sourced in South Africa and the wine is crafted as a classic Bordeaux-style blend, led by Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, with Merlot and Malbec adding depth and roundness. It is dry-fermented on the skins in multiple fermentation tanks, followed by an extended post-fermentation maceration to build structure and colour. The wine is then matured for 20 months in 225-litre French oak barrels, with 30% new oak contributing spice, texture and additional complexity.

Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for grilled lamb, roast beef, venison, braised short ribs or rich mushroom dishes. It also works well with mature hard cheeses and herb-driven dishes. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for 30–60 minutes if possible to allow the aromas and oak to open fully.
