Description

Andrias Gvino Rkatsiteli Vardo Dry Amber Wine 2021 is a characterful Georgian orange wine crafted from the extremely rare Rkatsiteli Vardisperi grape, organically grown in Kakheti. Made without additives or added sulphur and aged in traditional qvevri, it is a pure, unvarnished expression of Georgia’s ancient winemaking heritage. With its deep amber‑rosé hue and captivating, unconventional aromatics, this wine will appeal to adventurous drinkers looking for something truly distinctive.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this wine shows a striking orange-red to copper-amber color—deeper and more hypnotic than a classic pale rosé, with a slight haze that hints at its unfiltered, natural character. The nose is intense and beguiling: think dried apricot, blood orange peel, rosehip and wild herbs, layered with notes of black tea, dried flowers, gentle spice and a subtle earthy, qvevri-driven mineral tone. On the palate, Rkatsiteli Vardo is dry, structured and firmly textural, with clearly defined tannins from a month of skin contact—more reminiscent of a light red than a conventional white or rosé. Flavors of candied orange, quince, crabapple and stone fruits mingle with savory tea-like nuances, crushed nuts and a touch of sour cherry. The grip is balanced by fresh, food-friendly acidity, leading into a long, slightly saline finish. Enjoyable now for its energy and aromatic complexity, it also has the structure to evolve for several years under good cellaring conditions, gaining more tertiary, nutty and honeyed notes.

Production
The grapes for this Rkatsiteli Vardo hail from organically farmed vineyards in Georgia’s historic Kakheti region, where a continental climate and stony, well-drained soils provide ideal conditions for slow, even ripening. Harvest is carried out by hand to ensure only healthy, perfectly ripe bunches are selected. In line with Georgia’s millennia-old traditions, the wine is fermented and aged in buried clay qvevri, with around one month of skin contact to build color, tannin and complexity. No additives or sulphur are used, and the wine is neither fined nor filtered, so natural sediment in the bottle is normal and part of the authentic qvevri style.

Food & Serving
This is a serious food wine that thrives alongside bold flavors. Its tannin and structure make it an excellent partner for grilled and roasted meats, barbecue, aged and semi-hard cheeses, and richly spiced dishes, including spicy cuisine and modern fusion plates that mix sweet, sour and umami elements. It also pairs beautifully with roasted vegetables, mushrooms, and Georgian-inspired fare. Serve at 12–14°C (slightly cooler than a light red) to highlight its aromatics and texture. A brief decant of 20–30 minutes helps the wine open up, especially when young, and do not be afraid of the light sediment—simply pour gently or embrace it as part of the natural style.

Producer
Andrias Gvino is a small, quality-focused producer dedicated to reviving Georgia’s ancient qvevri traditions and lesser-known native varieties like Rkatsiteli Vardisperi. Working in Kakheti, the country’s historic heartland of wine, they champion organic farming and minimal-intervention cellar work to capture the purity and character of their terroir. By crafting wines such as Rkatsiteli Vardo—unfiltered, unsulphured and unapologetically authentic—Andrias Gvino has earned a following among natural wine enthusiasts and those seeking distinctive, regionally expressive bottles that speak to Georgia’s 8,000-year winemaking legacy.
