Description
Andrias Gvino Khikhvi Dry Amber Wine 2022 is a characterful Georgian orange wine made from the rare Khikhvi grape, cultivated in Kakheti since the 5th century. Crafted in traditional qvevri with no additives or added sulphur, it offers a pure and unadulterated expression of this ancient variety. Its deep amber hue, complex aromatics and firm tannic structure make it a distinctive choice for adventurous wine lovers seeking authenticity and history in the glass.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Khikhvi shows a luminous amber to deep golden colour, the classic shade that has given Georgian qvevri whites the name “amber wine.” The wine is unfiltered, so expect a natural, slightly hazy appearance that underlines its minimal-intervention character.
On the nose, it opens with aromas of green tea, dried fruits (think apricot, apple and a touch of fig), along with subtle waxy and honeyed notes. Hints of dried flowers, herbal spice and a gentle nuttiness add further layers. The palate is dry, textural and firmly structured, with a pronounced tannic grip derived from the five days of skin contact. Flavours of dried stone fruit, citrus peel, tea leaves and a faint resinous note unfold with air, supported by fresh but integrated acidity. This is a wine that can easily evolve over several years in bottle, gaining even more complexity and softness in its tannins with careful cellaring.
Production
The Khikhvi grapes are sourced from Kakheti in eastern Georgia, a region famed for its sun-drenched vineyards, warm continental climate and diverse alluvial and clay-rich soils that suit long macerations and qvevri ageing. The grapes are harvested by hand, ensuring only healthy, ripe bunches are selected for vinification. Following the traditional Kakhetian method, the must ferments naturally with indigenous yeasts in buried clay qvevri, with around five days of skin contact to build colour, structure and aromatic depth. After fermentation, the wine remains in qvevri for about a year, resting on its skins and lees before being bottled without fining or filtration and without any added sulphur, preserving the wine’s authenticity and natural character.
Food & Serving
This is a food wine through and through, thanks to its tannic structure and savoury complexity. It pairs beautifully with roasted or grilled meats (lamb, pork, duck), aged or semi-hard cheeses, and a wide range of grilled dishes and barbecue. Its tea-like tannins and dried-fruit notes also make it an excellent match for spicy cuisine and modern fusion dishes, where it can stand up to bold flavours and aromatic spices. Serve at around 12–14°C, slightly cooler than a light red, and consider a brief decant of 20–30 minutes to help the wine open up its aromatic profile and soften the tannins.
