Aalto 2023 500CL

Aalto 2023 is a powerful yet beautifully composed Tempranillo from Castilla y León, showing exactly why Ribera del Duero is one of Spain’s most celebrated regions for serious red wine. Crafted under the direction of Mariano García, the legendary figure behind decades of excellence at Vega Sicilia, it combines depth, precision, and remarkable balance.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine is dark, dense, and immediately expressive, with layers of ripe cherry, plum, and blackberry at the core. These fruit notes are woven together with spice, coffee, liquorice, and subtle oak, creating a profile that is both generous and polished. The palate is full-bodied and concentrated, yet the tannins are exceptionally smooth, giving the wine a supple, luxurious feel. A cool, fresh backbone keeps the richness in check, and the finish is long, precise, and harmoniously balanced. While already delicious now, it has the structure to develop gracefully over the next 8–12 years.

Production
The wine is made from 100% Tinto Fino sourced from old vines, between 40 and 80 years of age, planted in Castilla y León. The grapes are harvested by hand and rigorously selected before fermentation, and the wine is then aged for around 17 months in a combination of French and American oak barrels, which helps build complexity without overpowering the fruit.

Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for roasted lamb, grilled beef, game, braised short ribs, or rich stews, as well as mature hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 1–2 hours if drinking it young to help the wine open up and show its full aromatic range.
