Aalto 2020 Magnum

Aalto 2020 Magnum is a powerful, beautifully structured Ribera del Duero made entirely from Tempranillo, known locally as Tinto Fino. Crafted from carefully selected fruit from old vines and matured in magnum format, it shows the depth, elegance, and ageing potential that have made Aalto one of the standout names in modern Spanish wine.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it pours a deep, intense purple, hinting at the concentration to come. The nose is layered with fresh dark fruit, framed by subtle oak spice and refined barrel-derived complexity. On the palate, it is full-bodied and elegant, with a polished structure and flavours of liquorice, blackcurrant, roasted coffee, spice, and tobacco. The wine already offers impressive balance, but its concentration and firm backbone suggest excellent ageing potential. Served from magnum, it will evolve especially gracefully, gaining further nuance and softness over time.

Production
The grapes come from a mix of leased parcels in Ribera del Duero and Aalto’s own vineyards in Valladolid, including 40–80-year-old vines and younger plantings. All fruit is hand-harvested and rigorously selected to ensure only the best grapes are vinified. After fermentation, the wine spends 16 months ageing in a combination of new and used French and American oak barrels, adding depth, complexity, and finesse without overpowering the fruit.

Food & Serving
This is a wine built for rich dishes such as grilled beef, roast lamb, game, braised short ribs, and mature hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 1–2 hours if drinking young to allow the aromas and structure to open fully.

Aalto was founded in 1999 and quickly established itself as one of Ribera del Duero’s most respected producers. The winery is known for combining old-vine sourcing, meticulous vineyard selection, and a refined modern style that highlights the region’s power and precision.
