Description
The 2024 'Kin' Grenache from Alkina offers a beautifully terroir-driven expression of Barossa Valley Grenache, shaped by sustainable, regenerative viticulture and a precise, elegant winemaking approach. Its name, 'Kin,' reflects the close connection between soil, vines, and people—an idea that sits at the heart of Alkina’s philosophy.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a bright, light ruby color. The nose is lifted and inviting, with notes of raspberry and red cherry, alongside floral tones and subtle herbal nuances. On the palate, the wine is juicy and precise, with fine-grained tannins, lively freshness, and a gently saline finish that adds length and tension.
This is a Grenache with a refined, approachable style rather than overt power. The balance of ripe fruit, freshness, and structure suggests good drinking now, while still offering the ability to develop added complexity over the next few years.
Production
Alkina lies in the northwestern part of Barossa Valley, South Australia, where the vines grow on sandy loam soils over iron-rich subsoil. These conditions support even ripening and help preserve freshness in the fruit. The grapes were selectively harvested and handled gently, with fermentation carried out using natural yeasts and, in part, whole clusters. The wine was then matured in neutral oak to keep the fruit expression clear and the style focused.
Food & Serving
Ideal with grilled lamb, Mediterranean vegetable dishes, or herb-roasted poultry. It also works well with tomato-based pasta dishes, olives, or mild aged hard cheeses. Serve at 15–17 °C, and decanting is optional—recommended only if you want to open up the wine a little more in its youth.
Producer
Alkina is known for its terroir-focused approach and commitment to sustainable, regenerative farming in Barossa Valley. The estate has gained recognition for producing wines that emphasize site expression, balance, and clarity rather than heavy-handed extraction. 'Kin' is a fitting example of that philosophy, showcasing the region in a fresh, thoughtful style.
