The 2024 “Hell” Riesling from Franziska Herke is a precise, elegant site wine from Germany’s Rheingau, one of the world’s classic Riesling regions. Defined by vibrant freshness, fine mineral character and an unmistakable sense of place, it offers a refined expression of the vintage and Herke’s natural, terroir-focused approach.
Tasting Notes
Bright and crystalline in appearance, the wine opens with expressive aromas of lime, grapefruit, green apple, peach and white currants, complemented by white flowers, lemon balm and a subtle mineral note. On the palate, it is taut, focused and exceptionally elegant, combining clear citrus fruit with vibrant acidity and a saline, stony character.
The finish is long, cool and refreshing, with excellent balance and appetite appeal. The concentrated acidity and mineral structure suggest very good ageing potential over the next several years, while its youthful freshness makes it enjoyable now.
Production
The grapes are selectively hand-harvested and handled with care to preserve their freshness and individual character. Spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts is followed by maturation on the fine lees in stainless-steel tanks and partly in large wooden casks. The Rheingau’s varied soils of slate, quartzite, loess and clay contribute precision, mineral depth and elegant fruit to the finished wine.
Food & Serving
Serve chilled at approximately 8–10°C. This Riesling is an excellent match for shellfish, sushi, fine fish, poultry and aromatic Asian cuisine, as well as goat’s cheese and delicate vegetable dishes. Decanting is not necessary, although a brief period of aeration in the glass can allow its floral and mineral nuances to unfold.
Producer
Franziska Herke represents a thoughtful, nature-oriented approach to Rheingau winemaking, combining careful vineyard work with minimal-intervention cellar practices. Through hand harvesting, spontaneous fermentation and maturation that balances steel with large wooden vessels, her wines emphasize freshness, precision and terroir. This 2024 bottling reflects the Rheingau vintage particularly well, showcasing its finesse, mineral character and promising ageing potential.
