Description
The 2023 Westhofen Brunnenhäuschen “Abtserde” Riesling VDP.Grosses Gewächs is a rare single-vineyard wine from Weingut Keller, sourced from one of Rheinhessen’s most distinguished Riesling sites. From the historic Abtserde parcel within the VDP.Grosse Lage Westhofener Brunnenhäuschen, it combines remarkable precision and mineral tension with the depth and ageing potential expected of Germany’s finest dry Rieslings.
Tasting Notes
Bright and focused in appearance, this Riesling opens with an elegant bouquet of white peach, lime zest, ripe green apple and delicate apricot. Floral notes, cool herbs and a distinctly chalky mineral character emerge alongside nuances of flint, wet limestone and subtle spice as the wine breathes.
The palate is concentrated yet remarkably weightless, driven by vibrant acidity and a pronounced saline minerality. Dense, pure fruit is balanced by impressive freshness and an almost crystalline precision, leading to an exceptionally long finish. Although already beautifully balanced in its youth, the wine has the structure and complexity to develop for many years—potentially over several decades—in bottle.
Production
The vines grow on deep soils marked by limestone, marl and loess in an exposed site that benefits from excellent sun exposure and cooling air currents. Grapes are harvested exclusively by hand in several selective passes, followed by gentle whole-cluster pressing. Fermentation takes place spontaneously with indigenous yeasts, and the wine matures for many months on its fine lees in large wooden casks, partly in traditional Stückfässer. Minimal clarification and intervention help preserve the transparency and distinctive terroir character of the Abtserde parcel.
Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 10–12°C, allowing the wine to warm slightly in the glass as its aromatic complexity develops. It is an exceptional match for lobster, langoustines, scallops, turbot, pike-perch and other refined seafood, as well as veal with a light sauce, poultry with truffle and sophisticated vegetarian dishes. Decanting is not essential when young, but a short decant of around 30–60 minutes can help reveal its mineral depth and layered aromas. With bottle age, careful decanting may be useful if sediment is present.
Producer
Weingut Keller, based in Flörsheim-Dalsheim, is one of Rheinhessen’s most celebrated estates and is internationally renowned for its precise, terroir-driven Rieslings. Its top vineyards, including the historic Abtserde parcel in Westhofener Brunnenhäuschen, are regarded among Germany’s finest sources for dry white wine. Keller’s wines are distinguished by their combination of crystalline purity, vibrant acidity, profound mineral character and exceptional longevity, qualities that are particularly compelling in the promising 2023 vintage.
