The 2023 Nieder-Flörsheim Frauenberg Spätburgunder VDP.Grosses Gewächs trocken is a single-vineyard Pinot Noir from one of Rheinhessen’s most distinguished sites, crafted by the renowned Weingut Keller. Though Frauenberg is internationally celebrated for its Riesling, selected parcels also produce highly refined Spätburgunder, combining crystalline fruit, limestone-driven minerality and impressive ageing potential. As a VDP.Grosses Gewächs, it represents the estate’s highest classification of dry, site-specific wine.

Tasting Notes
Brilliant and finely coloured, the wine opens with an expressive bouquet of red cherries, wild strawberries, raspberries and redcurrants, followed by delicate notes of violet, rose petals, cedar, fine spice and forest floor. With air, subtle nuances of truffle, black tea and graphite emerge, complemented by a distinctive chalky mineral character. On the palate, it is silky, precise and remarkably deep. Fine-grained tannins and vibrant acidity frame the transparent red fruit, while a gently salty limestone note provides tension and length. The finish is cool, mineral and persistent. Already compelling in its youth, this Spätburgunder should develop beautifully over the next decade or more under suitable cellar conditions.

Production
The grapes come from the Frauenberg Grosse Lage near Nieder-Flörsheim, where limestone and clay marl soils contribute structure, depth and pronounced minerality. Grapes are carefully selected and hand-harvested over several passes before gentle destemming and traditional fermentation on the skins with native yeasts. The wine matures for many months in high-quality French barriques with discreet toasting, undergoing malolactic fermentation in barrel. It is bottled with minimal fining and filtration to preserve its precision and terroir character.

Food & Serving
A superb partner for refined dishes such as venison loin, pigeon, game birds, veal fillet, lamb loin, braised mushrooms and truffle-based cuisine. It also pairs beautifully with mature cheeses including Comté, Époisses and Brillat-Savarin, while its elegance makes it rewarding to enjoy on its own. Serve lightly cool at around 14–16°C. Decanting for 30–60 minutes is recommended in its youth, particularly if serving soon after opening.
