2023 "Franz" Riesling Franziska Herke Rheingau 0,75l

The 2023 “Franz” Riesling from Franziska Herke is a single-vineyard wine from Germany’s celebrated Rheingau region, where Riesling has long been central to the area’s identity. Crafted with a natural, terroir-focused approach, it combines crystalline fruit, vibrant acidity and fine mineral depth in a precise and elegant style.

Tasting Notes
Bright and refined in appearance, this Riesling opens with expressive aromas of lime, grapefruit, green apple and peach, complemented by whitecurrant, white flowers, lemon balm and delicate herbal nuances. A subtle mineral character adds further freshness and complexity. The palate is taut, energetic and exceptionally precise, with vibrant acidity, clear fruit and a lightly saline mineral streak. Its cool, appetising finish is long and focused. The balanced structure and freshness give the 2023 vintage very good ageing potential, while also making it approachable when young.

Production
The wine comes from Rheingau vineyards characterised by a mix of slate, quartzite, loess and clay soils, which contribute precision, freshness and mineral expression. The grapes are selectively hand-harvested and gently processed before undergoing spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts. Maturation on the fine lees in stainless-steel tanks and partly in large wooden casks preserves freshness while adding texture, depth and finesse.

Food & Serving
Serve well chilled at approximately 8–10°C. It is an excellent match for shellfish, sushi, delicate fish, poultry and Asian-inspired dishes, as well as goat’s cheese, vegetarian cuisine and refined starters. Decanting is generally not necessary, although a brief airing in the glass or a short decant can help reveal additional aromatic detail.
