Description
Château Cos d’Estournel 2023 is a prestigious Saint-Estèphe from one of Bordeaux’s most recognisable estates. Classified as a Deuxième Grand Cru Classé in the 1855 classification, it combines the power and structure associated with the northern Médoc with remarkable polish, freshness and depth. A compelling choice for collectors, this is a wine built to develop gracefully over many years.
Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep, concentrated colour, suggesting the richness and intensity of the vintage. Its expressive bouquet opens with blackcurrant, blackberry and dark cherry, followed by notes of cedar, oriental spices and subtle toasted nuances from oak maturation.
On the palate, it is powerful and concentrated yet finely composed, with ripe, structured tannins and precise acidity providing balance. Dark fruit and a distinctive mineral tension carry through to a long, complex finish. Although approachable with careful decanting, the wine has considerable ageing potential and should evolve beautifully over the next 15–25 years or more under suitable cellaring conditions.
Production
The vineyards lie on gravel-rich slopes—the origin of the name “Cos”—over clay-rich subsoils in Saint-Estèphe, a combination that contributes power, structure and mineral depth. Grapes are hand-harvested with strict selection and vinified parcel by parcel in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks and concrete vats. The wine is then matured for approximately 16–18 months in French barriques, including a high proportion of new oak, to complement its concentrated fruit and firm structure.
Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 16–18°C after allowing the bottle to come gradually to serving temperature. Decant for two to three hours when enjoying the wine young, both to open its aromas and to soften its youthful tannins. Its depth makes it an excellent match for roast or grilled lamb, prime beef, game, rich stews and mature hard cheeses.
Producer
Château Cos d’Estournel is one of the landmark estates of Saint-Estèphe in Bordeaux’s northern Médoc. Its distinctive château and long-standing reputation have made it an iconic name in the region, while its Deuxième Grand Cru Classé status confirms its historical importance within the 1855 classification. The estate is particularly valued for producing powerful, age-worthy wines that unite Saint-Estèphe’s natural structure with precision and refinement.
