The 2023 Branco Viúva Gomes from Colares is a striking expression of one of Portugal’s most distinctive coastal wine regions. Grown close to the Atlantic on deep sandy soils, it captures the salty freshness, precision, and maritime character that make Colares such a rare and historic source of white wine.
Tasting Notes
Pale and bright in the glass, this wine shows a clean, luminous profile that hints at its freshness and tension. The nose opens with citrus, green apple, white peach, and pear, layered with white flowers, fresh herbs, flinty notes, and a subtle sea-breeze salinity.
On the palate, it is taut, focused, and remarkably vibrant, with lively acidity and a clear mineral edge driving the wine forward. The finish is long, cool, and saline, with enough depth and texture from lees aging to give it extra complexity. It has the structure to develop well over the next few years, gaining nuance while keeping its freshness intact.
Production
Viúva Gomes sources fruit from the historic Colares zone, where vineyards sit very close to the Atlantic on deep sandy soils that have helped protect vines from phylloxera for generations. These conditions are central to the region’s identity and contribute to the wine’s unmistakable maritime mineral character. The grapes are hand-harvested and vinified with a light touch to preserve purity and terroir expression, then aged on fine lees to build texture, depth, and complexity without overshadowing the wine’s coastal freshness.
Food & Serving
Excellent with oysters, shellfish, grilled fish, ceviche, and other refined seafood dishes. It also works beautifully with goat cheese, roast poultry, and Mediterranean vegetable cuisine. Serve chilled, ideally around 8–10°C, and consider brief aeration if you want the saline and mineral notes to open up further.
Producer
Viúva Gomes is one of the key names in Colares, a region known for preserving some of Portugal’s most unusual and historically important vineyards. The producer is closely associated with the traditional style of the area and plays an important role in maintaining its heritage and reputation. Its wines are valued for authenticity, terroir transparency, and a strong sense of place, making the estate a respected reference for Colares whites.
