The 2022 Westhofen Brunnenhäuschen “Abtserde” Riesling VDP.Grosses Gewächs is a profound dry Riesling from one of Rheinhessen’s most distinguished sites. Sourced from the historic Abtserde parcel and crafted by Weingut Keller, it combines crystalline precision, intense limestone-driven minerality and remarkable cellaring potential—hallmarks of Germany’s finest Grosses Gewächs wines.

Tasting Notes
Bright and focused in the glass, this Riesling opens with an expressive yet finely detailed bouquet of lime zest, citrus peel, white peach, ripe apple and subtle apricot. Hints of white flowers, flint, fresh herbs and wet limestone add further complexity, while a distinctly saline mineral character points to its prestigious Westhofen origins. The palate is concentrated yet exceptionally precise, driven by vibrant acidity and a cool, chalky mineral core. Ripe fruit is balanced by impressive tension and freshness, leading to a long, elegant finish that is both salty and remarkably persistent. Already compelling in its youth, the wine should develop considerably more complexity with extended bottle age and has the structure to mature gracefully for many years.

Production
The grapes come from the Brunnenhäuschen “Abtserde” parcel, where deep limestone, marl and loess soils help retain and regulate water during Rheinhessen’s warm, dry growing season. The fruit is harvested by hand in several selective passes and gently whole-cluster pressed. Fermentation takes place spontaneously with indigenous yeasts, followed by many months of maturation on the fine lees in large wooden casks. This traditional approach adds depth and texture while preserving the wine’s crystalline freshness and unmistakable sense of place.

Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 10–12°C, allowing the wine to warm slightly in the glass as it opens. It is an excellent match for lobster, langoustines, scallops, turbot, sole, pike-perch and other delicate seafood, as well as veal with a light sauce, poultry with morels or truffles, and refined vegetarian dishes. Decanting is not essential, but a brief decant or generous aeration in a large Riesling glass can help reveal its mineral complexity, particularly when enjoyed young.
