Description
2022 The Plow Pinot Noir from Lingua Franca is a refined single-vineyard wine from Oregon’s Eola-Amity Hills, one of the Willamette Valley’s most celebrated sites for Pinot Noir. Shaped by cool Pacific winds, volcanic soils, and a Burgundian-inspired approach, it stands out for its precision, freshness, and striking mineral depth.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Pinot Noir shows a vibrant, translucent ruby color. The nose opens with red cherry, wild strawberry, raspberry, and cranberry, layered with rose petals, tea leaf, herbs, baking spice, and a subtle earthy note that recalls forest floor and orange zest.
The palate is silky and finely structured, with lively acidity, cool red fruit, and polished tannins that give the wine shape without weight. It finishes long, savory, and mineral-driven, with impressive finesse. The 2022 vintage already offers beautiful balance, but it also has the structure to age gracefully over the next 8–10 years, and likely longer in a good cellar.
Production
The Plow Pinot Noir comes from the Eola-Amity Hills in Oregon’s Willamette Valley, where the Van Duzer Corridor pulls cool Pacific air inland and extends the growing season. The vineyard’s volcanic soils and cool climate help produce wines with clarity, tension, and a distinctly mineral signature. The grapes are hand-harvested and carefully sorted, then vinified with a gentle, low-intervention philosophy to preserve site expression. Aging takes place in French oak barrels with restrained use of new wood, allowing fruit, structure, and terroir to remain in perfect balance.
Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for duck, veal, quail, roast chicken, and dishes with mushrooms or truffle. It also pairs beautifully with grilled salmon, tuna, and aged soft cheeses. Serve slightly chilled, ideally around 15–16°C, and decanting for 20–30 minutes can help the aromatics open up, especially in its youth.
Producer
Lingua Franca is one of Oregon’s most respected modern Pinot Noir producers, closely associated with the Eola-Amity Hills and a style that blends Burgundian precision with Oregon’s cool-climate character. The winery has earned a strong reputation for producing transparent, terroir-focused wines with elegance and depth, and is widely regarded as a benchmark producer in the region.
