The 2022 Obegg Sauvignon Blanc from Weingut Walter Polz is a striking single-vineyard white from one of Südsteiermark’s most distinctive sites. Raised on a cool, wind-swept plateau with sandy topsoil over coral limestone, it combines power, precision, and a beautifully stony mineral core. Walter Polz shapes the wine in a refined, Bordeaux-inspired style, while keeping the unmistakable freshness and finesse of Styria.

Tasting Notes
Bright and polished in the glass, this Sauvignon Blanc shows a pale straw color with youthful brilliance. The nose is expressive and layered, opening with exotic fruit, grapefruit, and ripe pineapple, followed by subtle notes of tobacco and a touch of vanilla from the oak élevage. On the palate, it is dense, creamy, and firmly structured, yet always lifted by elegant acidity and a precise mineral edge. The wine finishes long, savory, and structured, with enough depth to develop beautifully over the coming years. It already offers great charm, but its balance and concentration suggest strong aging potential.

Production
Ried Obegg is one of the standout vineyard sites in Südsteiermark, where sandy topsoil over coral limestone and the cool, exposed high plateau create wines with tension, spice, and pronounced minerality. The grapes were selectively hand-harvested and underwent spontaneous fermentation in 500-liter oak barrels. The wine then spent 12 months on the full lees in wood, followed by another 12 months of maturation in stainless steel, adding texture, depth, and precision.

Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for scallops, grilled fish, and poultry, especially dishes with a rich or creamy sauce. It also works well with Asian cuisine where spice, acidity, and aromatic intensity meet. Serve chilled at around 10–12°C, and decanting is not necessary, though a short time in the glass will help the wine раскры its full aromatic range.
