Description
The 2022 Nieder-Flörsheim Frauenberg Spätburgunder VDP.Grosses Gewächs trocken is a single-vineyard Pinot Noir from the renowned VDP.Grosse Lage Frauenberg in Rheinhessen. Crafted by Weingut Keller in a distinctly Burgundy-inspired style, it combines crystalline red fruit, finely integrated oak and pronounced limestone minerality. As a VDP.Grosses Gewächs, it represents one of Germany’s most prestigious categories of dry, site-specific wines.
Tasting Notes
Bright and elegant in appearance, the wine reveals an expressive bouquet of red cherries, raspberries, wild strawberries and redcurrants, complemented by delicate notes of violet, rose petal, cedar and fine spices. With aeration, more complex nuances of black tea, truffle, forest floor and chalky minerality emerge.
On the palate, it is silky, precise and remarkably focused. Fine-grained tannins provide structure while vibrant acidity brings freshness and energy. The limestone character lends depth and tension to the ripe red fruit, leading to a long, cool finish with impressive persistence. This is a beautifully balanced Spätburgunder with the concentration and structure to develop for several decades in a good cellar.
Production
The Frauenberg’s steep, south-eastern-facing vines grow on deep limestone, clay marl and weathered limestone scree. These soils, combined with a relatively cool microclimate, promote a long growing season and gradual phenolic ripening. The grapes are harvested by hand and rigorously selected in the vineyard before careful destemming, natural-yeast fermentation and gentle maceration. The wine then matures for many months in high-quality French barriques with a fine toast, undergoing malolactic fermentation in barrel. It is bottled only after extended maturation and with minimal intervention, allowing the site and vintage to remain at the forefront.
Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 14–16°C, allowing the wine to show its perfume and freshness without masking its finesse. It is an elegant partner for venison, pigeon, guinea fowl, veal fillet and rack of lamb, as well as braised mushroom dishes and truffle risotto. It also pairs beautifully with refined French cuisine and mature cheeses such as Comté, Brillat-Savarin and Époisses. A young bottle will benefit from 1–2 hours in a decanter; older vintages should be decanted more carefully, primarily to remove sediment.
