The 2022 Cabernet Franc trocken from Aaron Kreichgauer is a single-vineyard red from Rheinhessen, offering an elegant and distinctive expression of this classic French grape variety. Grown on limestone, loess and marl soils, it combines ripe dark fruit with Cabernet Franc’s characteristic herbal and peppery nuances. The warm 2022 vintage delivers both concentration and balance, supported by the region’s cool nights.
Tasting Notes
The wine shows a deep ruby-red colour. Its bouquet brings together blackcurrant, sour cherry and blackberry with classic Cabernet Franc notes of bell pepper, violet and fresh herbs. Subtle hints of black pepper, graphite and restrained toast add further complexity.
On the palate, it is medium-bodied, precise and graceful, with silky tannins and lively acidity. Dark fruit, delicate spice and mineral nuances carry through to a long, refreshing finish. The wine’s balanced structure and well-integrated tannins give it good ageing potential over the next several years, while also allowing it to be enjoyed with a little air in its youth.
Production
The vines are planted in Rheinhessen on limestone-, loess- and marl-rich soils, which contribute water retention, structure and a mineral character. Sustainable, close-to-nature viticulture and selective hand harvesting provide the foundation for the wine. After careful sorting, the grapes undergo traditional fermentation on their skins, allowing for gentle extraction of colour, aroma and fine-grained tannins. The wine then matures for several months in used wooden or small oak barrels, adding depth while preserving the varietal character of the Cabernet Franc.
Food & Serving
Serve at around 16–18°C. Decanting for 30–60 minutes is recommended, particularly when opening the wine young, to soften the tannins and reveal its aromatic detail. Its freshness and savoury character make it a natural match for lamb, roast beef, duck breast, braised veal and mushroom dishes. It also pairs beautifully with Mediterranean-style vegetables seasoned with rosemary and thyme, as well as mature cheeses such as Mimolette or Comté.
