The 2021 Westhofen Brunnenhäuschen “Abtserde” Riesling Kabinett is a finely poised, vineyard-designated wine from one of Rheinhessen’s historic and highly regarded sites. Made by Weingut Keller, one of Germany’s most acclaimed Riesling producers, it combines delicate fruit, vibrant acidity and pronounced limestone minerality with the graceful lightness that defines a great Kabinett.

Tasting Notes
Pale and luminous in the glass, this Riesling opens with aromas of white peach, lime, green apple and lemon zest, followed by ripe vineyard peach, delicate florals, fresh herbs and a distinctive chalky mineral character. On the palate, it is light-footed, energetic and remarkably precise. A subtle natural sweetness is beautifully balanced by lively acidity, while a saline mineral note adds tension and depth. The finish is long, clear and refined, with an almost weightless elegance. Thanks to its acidity, concentration and mineral structure, the wine should develop gracefully over many years in bottle.

Production
The grapes come from the Westhofener Brunnenhäuschen vineyard, specifically the “Abtserde” parcel, where deep limestone, clay marl and loess soils provide excellent drainage and contribute to the wine’s remarkable precision and mineral character. Cool nights and a long growing season help preserve freshness while allowing the fruit to ripen slowly. The grapes are harvested by hand in several selective passes, gently whole-bunch pressed and fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts. Fermentation finishes naturally, retaining the fine balance between fruit sweetness and alcohol. The wine is then matured for several months on its fine lees in traditional large wooden casks, building texture and complexity without compromising its delicacy.

Food & Serving
Serve well chilled at approximately 8–10°C. This Kabinett is an excellent match for sushi, sashimi, seafood, shellfish, spicy Asian dishes, poultry, fruit-led salads and fresh goat’s cheese. Its combination of sweetness and acidity also works especially well with modern fusion cuisine. It is equally enjoyable as an aperitif or served on its own. Decanting is generally unnecessary, although a brief airing in the glass can help reveal its floral and mineral nuances; older bottles may benefit from careful decanting if sediment has formed.
