Description
Penfolds St. Henri Shiraz is one of Australia’s most distinctive and admired interpretations of Shiraz, offering a more restrained, fruit-driven style than the house’s famous Grange. Sourced from Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale, it has long been celebrated for its elegance, purity, and ability to age gracefully, making it a true benchmark wine for collectors and Shiraz lovers alike.
Tasting Notes
Deep, vivid red in the glass, the 2021 St. Henri Shiraz opens with inviting aromas of raspberry, dark cherry, liquorice, violet, and a hint of nutmeg. There’s also a subtle layer of spice and earthy complexity that gives the wine extra dimension without overpowering its fruit core.
The palate is powerful yet silky, with fine-grained tannins and a mineral backbone that keep everything fresh and precise. Flavours of wild cherry, graphite, and toasted bread unfold into a long, elegant finish. While already beautifully balanced, this wine has excellent ageing potential and will continue to gain complexity over the coming decade or more.
Production
The fruit comes from carefully selected vineyards in Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale, two of South Australia’s most respected Shiraz regions, where warm days and cooling influences help develop richness alongside structure and freshness. Grapes are selectively hand-harvested, then fermented in stainless steel to preserve purity of fruit and regional character.
After fermentation, the wine matures for 12 months in large, seasoned oak casks, a choice that adds texture and nuance without dominating the wine. This approach is central to St. Henri’s style, allowing the varietal character and terroir expression to remain at the forefront.
Food & Serving
This Shiraz is a natural match for lamb, beef, game, and full-flavoured pasta dishes, as well as mature cheeses such as Cheddar or Manchego. Serve at around 16–18°C to let the wine’s aromatics and structure show at their best. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended, especially if enjoying it in its youth.
Producer
Penfolds is one of Australia’s most iconic wine producers, with a history dating back to 1844 and a reputation built on some of the country’s most important red wines. St. Henri was created as a deliberate counterpoint to Grange, highlighting fruit purity, regional character, and elegance over oak influence. Today, it remains one of Penfolds’ most respected wines and a standout example of classic Australian Shiraz.
