Description
The 2021 Chardonnay from Otronia is a striking expression of Patagonia’s far-southern frontier, coming from one of the world’s most remote quality wine projects. Its combination of cool-climate freshness, mineral precision and subtle oak influence gives it a distinctly elegant style that reflects both place and craftsmanship.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a pale gold color with green highlights. The bouquet opens with citrus peel, green apple and white peach, layered with gentle toasted notes and a faint hint of spice from the oak.
On the palate, the wine is taut and focused, with lively acidity, a finely textured creamy mouthfeel and a clear mineral line that carries through the finish. It feels precise rather than weighty, with a long, clean aftertaste and enough structure to develop gracefully over the next few years.
Production
Otronia’s vineyards are planted in Chubut, in the extreme south of Patagonia, near the 45th parallel, where windswept conditions, sandy-stony soils and a very cool climate define the terroir. The dramatic day-night temperature shifts help preserve acidity and aromatic purity in the grapes. The Chardonnay was hand-harvested, gently pressed, and fermented partly in stainless steel and partly in oak barrels, then matured for several months on fine lees to build texture and complexity.
Food & Serving
This Chardonnay pairs beautifully with grilled fish, shellfish, poultry in light cream sauces, creamy risotto, or mild semi-aged cheeses. Serve chilled at 9–11 °C. Decanting is not necessary, though a little time in the glass can help open up its subtle aromatic layers.
Producer
Otronia is one of the most exciting wine projects in Patagonia, known for pushing viticulture to the edge of what is possible in the southern reaches of Argentina. Its location in Chubut has made it a reference point for cool-climate winemaking in the country, with a reputation for producing wines of purity, tension and strong regional identity.
