Description
The 2020 Westhofen Morstein “Felix” Spätburgunder trocken is a rare single-vineyard Pinot Noir from Weingut Keller, one of Rheinhessen’s most celebrated estates. Named after Felix Keller, this Burgundy-inspired bottling showcases the precision, elegance and mineral character that have made Westhofener Morstein one of Germany’s most renowned vineyard sites.
Tasting Notes
Bright ruby in colour, the wine opens with an intricate bouquet of red cherries, wild strawberries, raspberries and redcurrants, complemented by violet, rose petals, delicate spice, cedar and graphite. With further bottle age, more complex notes of truffle, forest floor, black tea and subtle smoke are likely to emerge.
On the palate, it is silky and remarkably precise, combining concentrated red-fruit flavours with finely grained tannins, lively acidity and a pronounced chalky minerality. The finish is long, cool and refined. Already approachable with air, this is a Spätburgunder with excellent ageing potential and should develop beautifully over the coming years.
Production
The grapes come from carefully selected parcels in Westhofener Morstein, where limestone, clay marl and limestone scree soils provide the wine with its distinctive mineral character. The fruit is harvested entirely by hand and rigorously sorted before traditional fermentation on the skins. Gentle extraction preserves the delicacy of the Pinot Noir while building structure and depth, followed by extended maturation in French barriques, including a selected proportion of new oak. Malolactic fermentation takes place in barrel, and the wine is bottled with minimal intervention to preserve the expression of its terroir.
Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 15–17°C. Decanting for one to two hours is recommended when enjoying the wine young, allowing its aromatics and fine structure to unfold; older bottles should be handled more gently and may only need a brief airing. Its elegant concentration makes it an excellent partner for saddle of venison, wood pigeon, guinea fowl, veal tenderloin, lamb, braised mushroom dishes and truffle risotto. It also pairs beautifully with mature cheeses such as Comté, Brillat-Savarin and Époisses.
Producer
Weingut Keller is based in Rheinhessen and is particularly associated with highly precise, terroir-driven wines from the limestone-rich vineyards around Westhofen. The estate’s approach combines rigorous vineyard selection, meticulous hand harvesting and restrained élevage to express the character of each site. This “Felix” bottling represents the winery’s ambitious, Burgundy-inspired interpretation of Spätburgunder, while the excellent 2020 vintage provides a strong foundation of ripe fruit, balanced acidity and long-term potential.
